I’m trying to apply to this position at Nordstroms. I’ve applied 5 times to other departments in the company, but I’ve never gotten a response. Can someone help me out with catering a resume for someone that’s never (well I was when I was 16 but that doesn’t count) worked in retail so that a retail environment would be interested in speaking to them? I know these positions are in high demand with this economy so I need to stand out.
It’s in the Women’s dresses department.

What sort of experience do you have that would make you an asset to be hired? That’s where you start.

It’s an auto fill so I can only input my resume. So I need some sort of format that picks up on their key words or something that gets me past the system. It’s a Taleo database so I know no one actually reads the resume. Just the computer scan. I hate these stupid computer scans. If people actually read these things, I’d have a much better chance of getting interviews. I think that’s why I only get calls from companies with less than 30 employees.
One of their screen questions is ‘how many years do you have in retail sales’. I’m worried that’s what’s knocking me out.

Is there a job description or requirement list that you could maybe copy & paste so we could grab some keywords and help you work them into your resume?

@ananeele: it would probably pick up words like customer service, product knowledge, dedication, enjoy working with the public, reliable.
lol i’ve worked in retail for awhile and these are things I usually include and hasn’t failed me yet. 😉

Right, but you need to modify your resume based on skills you have that would be an asset to them. You’d put those keywords right into your prior work experience.
Generic Department Store, City, State
– Assisted store manager in designing fashion displays (keyword: design, fashion)
– Organized shoe department by policies set by management (keyword: organize, shoe)
And stuff like that. revamp it all so you can actually throw those kind of keywords straight into job descriptions
