Your math looks right to me!  This is of course assuming you can find something that will let you earn that 90%.  Good luck! Sounds like a good program!

Based on what you’ve written, the math checks out.  If you are working 90% of the time, then your maternity benefits will be enough to close the gap to what you’d normally make.  If you work less than that though, then you will bring home less than you would if you’re working full time.

100% of your normal income, but 180% of your benefit.  My guess is it’s designed to allow you to work part time and not be penalized as much so you can transition to work easier?  You’d be working 90% as much but still getting paid 100%, or working half and still get paid more than half, right?  Sounds good to me!

@MapleCreekBride:  From how you explained it works it sounds right to me…. (the math). Would you be working fulltime?

From the sounds of it you are within the salary cap for getting the full 55% of mat leave (but anyone making above that salary only gets the general max….which I think is ridiculous because someone who makes double the “cap off” is now having to survive on a fraction of the % others get :s …..which for most people isnt enough to keep up with current bills etc….) I wont lie, I make WELL over the 48000 cap for the full 55% and when we have a child, we’re going to be totally boned! I’ve worked out I will only be getting 25% of my salary.

One thing I will warn you is the EI pmts do not include tax and as I’ve been warned by ALL my gf’s who’ve had babies you should be taking off/putting aside for tax season because you will get HAMMERED…..I had a friend on mat leave who didnt allow for taxes and they used all the money and when tax time came they owed like 3000 because of her mat leave!!! It was crazy. (obviously it had to do with her and her hubby filing taxes together but I remember her posting that mat leave screwed them badly)

@MapleCreekBride:  I’m in Ontario and my understanding is that your second set of math is what is correct. Pretty much, if you are earning income while on EI, EI is going to pay you the least amount it has to. I had debated continued working PT after the first few months, however, talking with my HR people it was determined that EI would deduct any income earned from my benefit, so essentially I’d be working for free.

MapleCreekBride:  I know I am regurgitating an old thread, but I just have to since you said this doesnt apply to your situation yet, so you could still use the information. The pilot program does not apply to maternity leave benefits. If you earn money while on EI for maternity leave, the money that you make is deducted dollar for dollar from your EI benefits.

If you are entitled to 467.50/week from EI, and you earn $200 that period, you would only get 267.50 from EI that 2 week period.
