Widest part of your hips.

You can go get measured without trying dresses on… just tell them you need to be measured to order a Bridesmaid or Best Man dress at an out-of-town store.

Self-measurements are notoriously inaccurate.

Look in a mirror face on and find where your hips that are the widest. Then measure from there, keeping the tape parallel to the floor.

You can’t tell where the widest part of your hips are? It’s hard to tell from that picture, but I’d say either at the pink dots or between the blue and pink. You measure around the widest part below your waist, which generally goes over your butt. Your hips and butt are in the same area.

ETA: This site has a good visual–G is where your hips are. This site has a good step by step/description, but she’s measuring the wrong area in the picture.

The hip measurements are at your hip bone.  But females tend to carry the most weight just below that, so you need to find the widest area.

@PaisleyMedic:  Ugh, I found that, too. It’s the same with measuring yourself for a bra. I found one site that said to add FIVE to the number you measure for under your bust. I just stood up and tried to surreptitiously find the widest part, and it’s like at the top of your thighs, where your femur would hook into your pelvis. I don’t think anyone saw me lol.

@PaisleyMedic:  How silly of those websites! On you, in that picture, I’d say the widest point of your hips is between the blue and pink dots. Closer to the blue, though.

I’ve worked as a seamstress and make some of my own clothes, so I think I know this stuff pretty well– the widest point of your hips generally happens right about where the fullest point of your butt is. To measure your hips, you put the tape measure– making sure it’s not twisted– all around you at that point. Let’s see if I can find a decent graphic to illustrate how it’s done. . . OK, here’s one. Line G is the proper hip measurement for what you’re trying to find out. Line F is the jeans waist point.

One thing that’s kind of weird about ready-made clothes: the standard hip point on dresses is placed 7 inches below the natural waist, less for petite clothes and more for tall clothes. But for something that is made or altered for you, like a wedding dress, the important number to know is your own widest-point-at-hip measurement (again, line G).

Hope this helps!! Have fun looking for dresses!

It is around the widest part of your hips/butt. It may be easier to tell from the side, where your butt sticks out the most. Or measure in all three places, whichever is the widest is you hips measurment. I agree that is appears to be between the blue and pink dots.
