I am 38 weeks pregnant with baby #1…38w5d if you want to get technical. I appologise for the Too Much Information because I am going to talk about bathroom stuff a little bit.
For the last day or two I have been feeling a little ‘off’. Sunday (two days ago) I went to the mall to pick up the last of the last few things for my baby (two wash mits, a tiny clock for the nursery and a few Dr. Seuss books if anyone is curious). I was SO winded and sore that what should have been an hour long errand turned into maybe two and a half hours with all the times I had to sit down and ‘rest’.
Yesterday I woke up with a little extra energy. I take two walks a day now that I am on maternity leave; both of which I finished a full 10-15 minutes faster than normal. I worked in an extra session on my yoga ball too. I was a little restless all day (which is odd for me). I was also experiencing a few more braxton hicks than usual. Around 4pm I suddenly got hit with some nausea and discomfort. No fever, no other symptoms. I made myself some toast, poured myself a glass of fizzy water (I have one of those home carbonation water machines) and cracked a window thinking I was having a hot flash. At around 7pm I got hit with surprise diarrhea. Right after that we had dinner. I was feeling well enough to eat, but still a little sick. I went to bed at around 10:30pm as usual.
This morning around 5:30am I was awoken by some lower back pain and cramping. At first I thought it was another wave of diarrhea…so I went and sat on the toilet. Nothing. The discomfort also passed quickly. Since then, about every 30-45 minutes I get a twinge of that ‘discomfort’. It feels like light lower back cramps, light period cramps and the urge to poop all at once. It only lasts maybe 30-40 seconds. Every time I get up to go to the bathroom ‘just in case’, and only this most recent time I passed some poop…mushy poop. I’m also ‘wired’ right now….and have been fully alert and unable to fall back asleep since 5:30am…this is QUITE unusual for me!
If it matters, at my 38 week OB appt I was 1cm dilated. Father-In-Law has been joking all week he thinks this baby is going to come early based on my behaviour too.
I’m not SAYING I think I’m in labour or anything…but all these ‘little things’ are starting to make me take pause. Is it possible that my body is getting ready? My due date is March 8/9 (they keep flip-flopping back and fourth between the two days)….but am I going to make it that far?
PLEASE be kind to me as I am a first time Mama.
Thanks in advance 🙂

Fingers crossed for you that you are close! I’m 41 weeks and have had braxton hicks (some really strong ones that kept me up at night), cramps, and diarrhea every day for several weeks now. You’re body is definitely getting ready but there’s no way of knowing if you are going to have that baby today or in a few weeks.
It sounds like you’re doing everything you can with walking and bouncing on your ball. Hopefully your baby will come before mine does (I’m being induced on Thursday and it’s expected to be a long process due to my lack of progress).

I don’t know anything about birthing babies but I’m super excited for you! Hang in there mama!

I felt like I needed to go, but nothing and less than an hour later my water broke and I went into labour, so it is possible. I think you’re on your way, but babies come when they want to. I’m excited for you already, good

Could be early labor. Mine always started off like menstrual cramps. When they started they were very faint, I could only feel them in bed in the quiet. Mine started at about 5:30am. They were about 8min apart. I was only paying attention because I had the tiniest little leak of fluid and I was also 40+5. It took some time for them to strengthen up but they never stopped just strengthened and got closer together. But on the other hand, people can have “early labor”/contractions on and off for weeks (prodromal labor). So sorry, doesn’t necessarily mean that labor is imminent. But I hope you don’t have to go through prodromal labor because I imagine it’s awful.

Thanks to everyone who has weighed in. It has now been 5 1/2 hours since I first woke with discomfort. I’ve eaten breakfast and showered. I still feel the same.

These are early or “false labor” as some refer to it signs. If you were contracting they would be closer together and consistent and you wouldn’t be able to do much other than sit and breathe through it. Your baby is growing rapidly until they are born at this point so your discomfort level is going to be very, very high at this point until delivery. I would take your time on your walks, I think it’s great that you’re up and moving but don’t over exert yourself if you don’t have to. If you start to contract start timing and paying attention to how long they last and how far apart. The feeling of needing to poop is your baby moving down into position, all very normal things. Hang in there mama!

snowflake8 : It could be very very early labor. Mine started at 39 weeks exactly as some cramping, light bleeding, and feeling restless and irritable. I went to bed that night but only slept until 3:30 am, I was wide awake and having minor sporadic contraction. We went to the birth center at 9:45 am and my son was born at 8 pm that evening. We didn’t bother leaving home until I was having regular contractions that I had to breathe through (I was 5 cm dilated when we arrived so they admitted me). Good luck! Could be soon, could be another week or more….

You could be in very early labor! The sudden burst of energy and then the change in bowels happened to me right before both my births. I cleaned and put away Christmas decorations for 9 hours before the birth of my daughter. That evening took a shower and 3 hours later in the hospital. Went from 0 cm dialted to 10 within 45 minutes. About 30 minutes after that I was holding our daughter. It can all happen very fast, even with the first child. Be ready!

Do you have an app or something to track the “twinges” (and later, contractions)? That could help you figure out how regualr they really are, let you know when you should call your doctor, etc.
Sounds like you’re getting close, so exciting!
