Can you haggle with photographers? If so, how do you go about it? I don’t want to be rude, but I reeeeeally want my dream photographer, she’s just a tad out of my original budget. Any suggestions on how to approach a “meet me in the middle” conversation? Has this worked or failed for any of you with photographers or other vendors?

I would not call it haggle but negotiate…I saw this one photographer and she wanted 4500 but offered to take 500 off. I did not go with her but she was willing to work with me and she is well known.

The worst she can say is no–why not give it a shot?
I wanted to start off by saying how much I love your work. You are quite literally my dream photographer. I am planning a wedding for <Date> and would love to hire you. That said, your services are a bit out of my budget, which is X. Is there any way we can work out a package that will fit inside or be closer to that amount? If not, do you have any associates who would be within my budget that you would recommend? Thank you so much for your time!

We did… well… kinda. We explained to them that we loved their work and style and that we really wanted to go with them but they were slightly out of our budget. Even if we did take off the album like we had discussed. They came back later with a grand knocked off their price because they loved us and really wanted to work it us. And when we told them where our venue was they said that if we had lead with that they would have knocked off some money just to be able to photograph there! I didn’t go in purposefully trying to get any money taken off. But that was just how it worked out!

My photographers sent me a quote and tax was included that added up to over $200. I wrote back saying I didn’t figure in taxes and I am over budget as it is. They wrote back saying they would cover the tax! 🙂

We totally did. We ended up getting an absolutely amazing, killer deal too. They took about $3000 off of their deal because they really liked me and my style and they were trying to break into a more offbeat market at the time. They now use my wedding photos at every promotional event they do.
As for how to approach it, go in knowing what you want and how much you can spend. Just say “Hey, I really love your work and I would really love for you to shoot my wedding but your price is a little out of my budget. What can we do?” If they’re offering a package that includes some things you don’t want (e-pics, cd, album, extra prints, etc) just ask if they would be willing to cut out those services for an equal reduction in price.
