@KatNYC2011: That’s more Aspirin (ASA, acetylsalicylic acid), not Advil/Motrin (Ibuprofen). Ibuprofen can be hard on your kidneys & liver in very high doses, but it’s not as bad as Tylenol (acetaminophen), and yeah, if you use a crapload of it it can hurt your stomach, but not as much as Aspirin, which can cause ulcers.

@SoontobeMrsA: 800mg x3 per day is fine! I’m a student nurse and I had a patient with TMJ (jaw pain), and she was getting 600mg every 6 hours (4 times a day), in addition to Percocets & T3s!

Whoa I’m glad I looked at this because if you have IBS you should probably never take ibuprofen!! I have IBD and every doctor I’ve ever seen says to never ever take ibuprofen! I know IBS is not IBD but I would imagine that the same reasons that ibuprofen is bad for IBD people is the same for IBS, it irritates and inflames the digestive tract in a way that Tylenol does not.

Definately call your dentist & tell them you are in a lot of pain. Tell them that you are taking 2400mg of Ibprofen a day because of the pain.
You can develop a stomach ulcer from too many pills, so I wouldn’t take that much!! It can also give you a kidney infection (my husband has this & its NOT fun). You can do a lot of damage by too many pills, some people can take a lot of pills & not have an issue, but other’s will have side effects.

Even with my surgery, they only wanted to prescribe ibuprofen until I said, “No, man, it upsets my stomach and I will need something stronger, anyway.” Definitely call and tell them you need something else!
