@SamanthaLovesJames:  I would guess that all those methods are effective 50% of the time. :p

Other than that I have heard that there’s some evidence to say that female sperm live longer so if you know when you’re going to ovulate and do it five days before you have an increased chance of a girl.

I hate to say it, but pretty much all of those techniques are wives’ tales. For every couple that swears they followed the techniques and hit “gender jackpot,” there’s another couple who did the same things and didn’t.

Shettles is supposed to be effective but bear in mind that your guys sperm may only make one gender so skewing isn’t going to work.  I think it’s a great idea to try it out but realize that you may still have the other gender.

You can pay $$$$ to have the sperm weighed and separated individually into “boy” Y sperm and girl “X” sperm which will increase your chances to something over 80% for a boy and over 90% for a girl.  Parents who have genetic diseases are more frequent users of this technology in order to prevent passing down sex-linked diseases to their children.

I’ve been meaning to make a poll about the Shettles method.  Maybe I will, I’d be interested to hear as well!  ETA: Just did.

Check with the ladies over at fertility friend on this.  I know they have multiple helpful posts and polls as well as charts of successful attempts.

I believe Shettles is what @SapphireSun: described.  We didn’t try it, because we just wanted to conceive a baby, any baby, and that turned out difficult enough.

According to Shettles, if you are going for a girl, you’d have to avoid BDing on or the day before ovulation. However, you only know for sure when you O’d after you O’d.  So to be on the “safe” side, you’d have to stop BDing early during your fertile days. Way to artificially decrease your chances to conceive at all!

I’m not really buying into this method.  I know we conceived on O day because I was away on a business trip the days before.  I can tell you in early fall if we are having the boy that we’re more likely to have according to Shettles.

If you want to be 100% sure about the gender, I think you will have to go with IVF and PGD and spend tens of thousands of $$$.  If you do it naturally, you have a 50% shot to get the desired gender, regardless whether you do it cowgirl style 5 days before O on a full moon after eating a pound of chocolate.
