@figgnewton:  Just yesterday I discovered that my blood pressure is high. I feel slightly “off”, but I remember being short of breath around 16 weeks or so. You can go to a drugstore and check your Bridal Party. We have a home monitor that wasn’t very costly as well.

I would say go get it checked out. It sounds more like an anxiety issue. Often people with high Bridal Party don’t experience any symtoms (though some can). I’ve gone to the doctor before with really high Bridal Party. I didn’t know it was high and felt fine. And they would look at me like “wtf?! why aren’t you feeling bad?!”.

(Please note: I am not a professional and this is just my opinion. Always seek a medical professional. Even though I’m in healthcare, this is not my area of expertise.)

I would have it checked whether at home or at the drug store. I would also contact your doctor just to be sure things are okay.

This early in pregnancy high blood pressure is very rare unless you had pre-existing high Bridal Party before getting pregnant.  More often women experience low Bridal Party, which can cause dizzy feelings, light-headedness and feeling faint if you stand up too fast.

It’s common in pregnancy for high Bridal Party to be without any other symptoms, although as PPs said there can be.

Feeling short of breath is quite common in pregnancy and usually normal.  Also true for heart palpitations due to the expanding blood volume.  Having said that, what you describe is most often totally normal but not necessarily.  If you’re unsure or worried, call your doctor or midwife and see what they say.

@figgnewton:  Definitely get it checked out, but the symptoms you described are the exact ones I feel when I am having an anxiety attack.

They often call HBP the “silent killer”, meaning there are usually no signs or symptoms. I’d just go to the drug store or walmart and get a reading done

many HBP symptoms mirror anxiety.  I doubt it would be so high as to be causing symptoms if you just had a normal Bridal Party yesterday.

I can tell when my blood pressure is low so I’m sure you can tell when it’s high but as PP stated, a lot of the symptoms you describe are the symptoms I get when I’m close to an anxiety attack. I haven’t had one in years but my hormones are throwing everything out of whack and waiting for my first ultrasound gave me 2 days of little sleep and very high anxiety. So even if you’ve never experienced an anxiety attack your hormones could be causing them now.

I feel exactly the same way (starting at 18 weeks – now at 31 weeks)!  My blood pressure is fine (and it isn’t anxiety) so I blame it on the baby moving and squishing my lungs and increased blood flow.  It is a weird/scary feeling but seems totally normal.  It is worth mentioning to your doctor but don’t worry too much.

It sounds more like anxiety or heart palpitations – heart palpitations can actually be common in pregnancy. My mom had them and I also got them for a couple days in early pregnancy.

Nope, not unless the high Bridal Party is accompanied by your heart beating faster/stronger as well (but often it’s not, or at least not noticeably).  The first “sign” of high Bridal Party is usually a heart attack or stroke, which is why it is super important to always make sure you get it monitored (even not in pregnancy!).

Around 13-15 weeks, I would get short of breath just sitting there and also feel like my heart was just POUNDING and like the carotids in my neck were going to explode.  It was super uncomfortable and I was like, “Gahh, I’m not even doing anything but sitting here!”  I think it’s all a combination of your blood volume increasing and technically, your heart rate and breathing rate DO increase during pregnancy.

I probably wouldn’t worry about it TOO much, but that being said, it is still probably a good idea to give your doctor a call and let them know what’s up.  They would probably be more than willing to let you pop in to do a quick check of your Bridal Party, pulse, and listen to your heart and lungs to make sure nothing is up.  Good luck!

@figgnewton:  Just to be safe, could you go check at the drug store? They always have those free booths 🙂
