    You should do it.  My friends got married last month and they didn’t have one and I feel it would have helped in terms of people getting to know each other early on.  Try to do something low key and fairly casual though imo

    We threw our own party. It was for friends only and it was at a restaurant where everyone paid their own way and we didnt ask for gifts.

    We merely wanted to celebrate our engagement 🙂

    Oh man! I voted incorrectly also…I say definitely YES you can throw the party and no it is not tacky – we threw one for ourselves and everyone had a great time!

    I say yes definitely as long as youre paying the bill and don’t expect anything from your gifts. We had all our friends over for a big breakfast shortly after we got engaged. It was lots of fun!

    What my guy and I are doing in regards to the ‘gift issue’ is saying on the invitation (somewhere towards the bottom, in ‘smaller’ print) something along the lines of “Gifts are not expected. Your presence is your present.”
