Hi Bees – I don’t know about all of you, but I got a lot of great stuff for my shower. I have been told that you can’t use it because you’re not married yet, but I really just want to start putting it away and clearing out some of my old stuff. My place isn’t that big! I’m of two minds because it would be great to start fresh after the wedding with these things… almost symbolic. But practically, it makes sense to start incorporating it in with my other things now.
I know that I won’t end up actually using it, but I’m curious as to what you guys think. So will you/did you use the gifts from your shower before you got married? Why/why not?

I think it’s crazy that there is actually a rule saying you can’t use a gift given to you because you aren’t married. I used everything the second I had it. I didn’t wait. My thought was, how will anyone know that you used it? And even if they did, that’s why they bought it for you! Go for it!

Dumbest rule ever! I used some of our stuff before the wedding.

@Birdee106: +1, I think people used to not use them until married because they hadn’t moved in together yet!
I took my stuff straight home and put it to work!

I think you should be able to use them whenever you get them. We didn’t use anything before because we didn’t live together and wanted everything new to use after the wedding.

I’m not using mine until we are married, but we are also going to be moving a few weeks after we have our shower, so its just not practical to open more things. I know that you aren’t supposed to open them because if you don’t get married you have to return them…kind of silly, but cancelled weddings do happen!

I voted other because we’re not using our gifts just yet but for a completely different reason. We are planning to have a huge garage sale after the wedding & I will be clearing all of the old to make room for the new. I know I’ll be getting more gifts at the wedding so I figured I would just do a big sweep after everything is said and done. Plus, I don’t have the time to deal with it now so I just stacked all of my gifts in the spare room for now.
If you want to use your gifts, I say go for it!!

@jivet: Ummm no that rule is so stupid!!!! I wish I could use all the amazing stuff I got at my shower but it’s all in storage until we get our own house 🙁

We waited. I hold with tradition. Plus, didn’t anyway see Sex and the City the movie? Shit happens and no one thinks it will happen to them, but it happens to someone… Best to be safe and wait. Plus, it is very excited to get home from the honeymoon and incorporate all the neww stuff into the household, and then you only have to do it once. If you start using stuff right way and giving it places, etc, what if you realize you need to reorganize it all or that you got two things that serve the same function but like the one you got at the wedding better than the one you got at the shower but you’ve already opened the shower one?

@mrsSonthebeach: That’s a great point.
Looks like it is time for me to purge the closets so that I can put this stuff away… at least I’ll have made the Goodwill very happy. 🙂

Other. We got some as Christmas presents and opened the tupperware because I was tired of using my broke ass Walmart containers. Everything else is still in the box, patiently waiting and silently hoping that we get a house. We’ll probably just unpack it and get rid of the old stuff after the wedding, though.

Lol how are they going to know if you did or didn’t use it? I started using my stuff right away!

I don’t think you should use it until after the wedding since if, god forbid, something happens and the wedding is called off, the presents should be returned.
