do we still register our marriage in Ontario? (Is this even an option?

Short answer… NO

In Ontario, a Wedding is ONLY Registered if it happened in the Province.

Canada has a long list of Countries that it will recognize Marriages from (some Civil, some Religious, and some Both).

You need to check that the country you wish to marry in, has their marriages legally recognized in Canada (and which type)

When you marry abroad, the onus is on the fact that you must meet the Marriage Requirements for the country / region / city you are marrying in.  (That info can be obtained by GOOGLING – Marrying in ___ – for the most part… just put in the location)

You must complete whatever requirements are needed to obtain a Wedding License in that Destination / Country.  And after the Wedding, YOU MUST FILE THE REQUIRED PAPERWORK WITH THAT COUNTRY so as to register the Wedding there… FORGET THAT STEP… and well YOUR MARRAIGE ISN’T LEGAL (because the cycle hasn’t been completed)

For more info on Marrying Abroad and how it relates to Canada, see the website FlyAway Weddings.com = http://www.flyawayweddings.com/legal/

PS… When you return to Canada, you can use your Wedding Certificate from the Country you married in to complete any required elements… Name Change, Address Changes, etc.

Some things (government things) are time sensitive… so you’ll want to take of those things asap… Revenue Canada, Your Drivers License, Health Card, SIN Card, Passport etc

Hope this helps,

If you don’t change your name right away, then at some point the Government will tell you that you cannot do so without PAYING for a Legal Name Change which costs several hundred dollars (vs doing it when you are married is FREE, except for any replacement cards you might have to purchase… ie, a Passport with your NEW Married Name is $ 87)

As well if you want to take your Hubby’s Surname and don’t change your paperwork / cards in a timely fashion, there can be a fine for that (ie Driver’s License)

I married in June 2012. So on my 2013 taxes in Feb, do I have to declare that I am married?

Your 2012 Personal Income Taxes need to be filed by April 30, 2013.  And YES you’d have to declare on them that you are married (vs the other options for Single – Divorced – Widowed – Common Law)

Hope this helps,
