I’m sorry this is hapeneing to you, but what are they going to do, steal the identities of 500,000 people? It sucks but at least there are a huge number of people affected so if you are one of them, your chances of being victimized are pretty small.

Personally I’ve probably been on a “compromised” list or had my info leaked 4 or 5 times by different agencies, my insurance company, my alma mater, etc. Most likely nothing will happen to you!

Amazing. I took out Canada Student Loans in that time period, so I may be one of those affected.

What was the data doing on a portable USB key anyway?!? I’m assuming it wasn’t encryped. I will be calling that number on Monday.

Thanks for the heads-up, @jessmicas:

@jessmicas:  I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to minimize the situation. It is scary, and other Canadian bees shoud be made aware.

Here in the US you can call the credit agencies and put a watch or something on your accounts, so that if any new accounts are  opened, they have to call you for cconfirmation.

I just wanted to reassure you that this actually happens alot, and probably nothing will actually be affected. The first few times it happened to me I was really anxious about it, but it has happend so often now that its like par for the course, LOL.

I’m assuming in Canada you also have the ability to check your credit reports and check there is no funny business?

I called today and I am not one of those affected. I hope other bees can say the same.

I couldn’t get through on the number today; guess I’ll wait and see if I receive a letter as I know they’ve got my up-to-date address. It’s totally ridiculous.

Y’all should call – so far everyone who went to the same university with me at the same time (including myself) have confirmed our personal information was lost. The government is refusing to pay for credit monitoring, so if you want to check this stuff, you’ll need to take care of it yourself (awesome).

ETA – it’s now also come out that if you were a dependant on your parents’ at the time of the loan or you had to provide information on your spouse, their personal information may also have been compromised.
