We went to Spence Diamonds in Vaughan, and I loved the experience. We went to several People’s, Mappins, etc and felt so forced towards prices and ring styles we didn’t like. Everytime I said I wanted a simple ring, the sales person would try to push a larger diamond on me. At Spence, we were totally free to walk around on our own. The sales woman stopped in once to ask us how things were going and recommend a few rings, but she very kindly backed off when I didn’t like the styles she was showing. Once we chose our ring, she sat us down and put everything under microscopes and showed us EXACTLY what we were getting, and when we told her our budget she found a nearly identical ring for half the price.

We will definitely be getting our bands there.

Mine’s from a family run jeweller in a small town in SW Ontario. It was important to my Fiance to get it there and I didn’t complain! Its a Canadian diamond with a custom made band, I’ll be getting my wedding band from there too.

My fiance and I got our rings at a local jeweler in Stoufville. We found that the prices in the mall are inflated compared to a local jeweler because their overhead is probably larger.

Going to a jeweler allowed us to customize our rings exactly to how we wanted it. I got my design from a website moissaniteco.com. My jeweler created the ring EXACT. It was a bit nerve wracking considering I was never able to see what the ring actually looked like on my finger but it worked out great 🙂

Ben Moss. I really love my setting and we got a great deal on a Canadian diamond.

Birks. I never have to question the quality of their product or service, plus all of their jewelry is made with Canadian diamonds. They don’t cut corners, my ring is built beautifully and I don’t have to worry about stones falling out or anything. Plus, walking into the store for a cleaning is always a really great experience- it’s just a special experience! A++

My wedding ring was custom made with family gold. It’s a simple band, so not much to it. Pretty pleased as well : )

I also got mine from etsy, I couldnt find morganite anywhere (not very common where I live I guess) , it was a great price and I am glad I bought from a guy with his own business rather than a big company for a few personal reasons

One of DH’s friends manages a jewellery store that her brother in law owns so my engagment ring and our wedding bands all came from there 🙂

Fiance went to Davidsons Jewellers in Ottawa. He was referred there by a friend of a friend, and had a great experience. We went looking at Peoples, Mappins, Birks, Charm, etc. but once he knew what I wanted, he just took the idea to Davidsons and they custom-made my ring. Our wedding bands are being made right now!

We went to People’s first. They were overly pushy with us (and eager to get to the next couple that came in, to try and make a sale) we went to Charm. The manager there was awesome! They gave us a really good discount and I never have to worry about my ring because we have lifetime warranty on the diamonds, redipping, cleaning, etc.

@carlypaige:  Complain.  My sister has a RHR that she got for her 21st birthday.  It’s covered under warranty.  She broke the band, sliced it completely and they repaired it under warranty.  Peoples, IMO, is a PITA to deal with, but they usually will do what’s covered if you complain enough.  I had to go back to the original store to get a copy of the warranty (I had the original, but it was on carbon paper and the ink had faded.  How I was to prevent this I have yet to understand.)

The Toronto area stores (STC, Fairview, Pickering and Yorkdale, in particular) have horrid customer service, my SO and I were ignored at Eaton Centre for 15 minutes, but ended up with the sweetest girl helping us in the end.  My sister has had fantastic service at the London store (she’s at university there now.) They absolutely should fix your ring if its under warranty.

I prefer Mappins, I have yet to have poor customer service in a Mappins store.  They’re the same company as Peoples.  The last one I went in I mentioned we had been ignored at Peoples and the staff even said “We’re the same company, we carry all the same products, we just have better customer service.”  And they did.  She was awesome.

FTR, Birks only carries Canadian diamonds, you don’t have to ask.  They don’t sell anything else.  We spent way too long in the Eaton Centre store with the manager a few weeks ago.  They’ll also do full custom work for you.  The warranty is only good for 5 years and is somewhat limited compared to other stores.

**ETA: I have shopped everywhere and looked into a warranties, etc.  I’ve had some great experiences at the big chains, I’ve bought a lot of jewellery and diamons (my mother loves anything that sparkles) and some beautiful pieces have come from chain stores.  You just have to know what you want, understand what you’re getting and read the fine print.  IMO, you should do that at the independent stores too.

@sostobe:  I didnt bother to take it in for the 6 month check-up so I think the warranty and anything that they would do for us would be out the window now. the ring isnt noticeably bent but it was just odd for them to make us pay the first time. she was saying they cover the diamond but not the band? but how can you cover the diamond without anything happening to the band you know?

@carlypaige:  IMO, that’s ridiculous.  I know for certain my sister had never taken her ring in for any kind of inspection.  I’d go in and complain until they did something.
