I’ve seen conflicting info for which form to use. My passport is still valid- all I want to do is change my last name to my married last name. Do I use the New Passport Application or Simple Renewal Form? Service Canada said Renewal, but I’ve read different things on the passport website and other websites online. I just want to make sure I fill out the right form- either form will cost $87:(

I just got a new passport with my married name about a month ago even though I’ve been married for a year now. I had to do the new passport application….I was told you can’t do the renewal form if you’re changing your name.
Also, I’m not sure if you know this already but the price of passports is going up at the first of July so the sooner you can get it done the better!

@As_You_Wish: Thanks! I was able to speak to a Passport Canada office earlier as well- definitely the New Passport Application to change name. Apparently Service Canada gives the wrong info a lot of the time- I would have been so ticked if I had paid the money and they had me fill out the renewal form as it for sure would have been rejected!!
I looked at the new fee structure- I’m going to wait until July 1 because the 10 year passport is $160, vs the 5 year passport for $120. Kind of pricey (Nexus card is only $50 for 5 years), but have to have it!

@little_d: Service Canada has given me wrong information so many times!!! Especially when I was trying to change my name for my business.
It makes sense to wait until July 1st if you’re going to get the 10 year passport. My passport was going to expire on July 1st and I didn’t want to wait until the last day to renew it so I just went with the 5 year passport this time.

@As_You_Wish: It’s frustrating. I used to work for BC provincial government and we got a ton of complaints about Service Canada, so I was already apprehensive about asking them questions!
I would have gone with the 5 year as well. We usually fly out of Bellingham, WA, so we just use out Nexus cards anyways, but I figured I might as well be safe and get the passport done too. Kind of annoying as I just got my passport renewed last year. Oh well, this will give us motivation to book some trips:)
