I need your thoughts on whether or not it’s appropriate to cancel part of my service with my hair/makeup artist…
Here’s the backstory: When I first started looking for wedding hair/makeup artists at a time that I thought was very far in advance (one year out), I was disappointed to find out that my top 3 choices were already booked on my date. Because I was feeling nervous about finding ANYONE available on my date, I booked hair and makeup services with a girl who was good, but not my favorite. At that point, I really just wanted the security of knowing I had someone for my day.
Now, 6 months later, I was lucky enough to book a makeup artist I have been following on Instagram for several years. She only books wedding makeup clients 6 months before the wedding month, so that’s why I was only able to book her now. I LOVE her work, and I am so excited to have her for my wedding day makeup! However, I still have the first girl booked for hair AND makeup services…
So my question is, do I email her and tell her I decided to go with a different artist for my wedding-day makeup, but I would still love to have her be my wedding-day hair artist? Or should I just cancel everything and find a new hair artist as well? I don’t want her to be offended by my choice to use another girl’s makeup skills, especially since I know they know one another.
Thanks, in advance, for your advice!

Are you getting ready alone, or with your bridal party?
I was in a similar situation as yours, and just told the original artist, that I wanted someone else to do our makeup so that my girls wouldn’t have to arrive to the getting ready location so early. She understood. Having two different artists also made the getting ready process much smoother.

Getting ready with the bridal party, but my makeup and hair artist will only be doing me, my mom, my fiance’s mom, and my sister (MOH). We have a family friend coming to do the rest of the bridal party for a lot less money.

I’d actually bank on needing two artists. 4 people for one MUA could take 4+ hours. Is that the time you planned? Each MUA could do 2 ladies. Or one hair and the other make up.

I think you should definitely go with the other makeup artist. As a PP mentioned – having a single person do hair and makeup for 4 people is going to take ages. You could use that as your reason for cancelling makeup with the first artist too, which makes it less personal. Say that as you get closer to the wedding you’ve realised your timeline is a bit tight and you’re planning to split the hair and makeup bookings to speed things up, and would she be ok with changing her booking to just hair? I wouldn’t think she’d get mad about that, after all it’s a still a booking and she might be happy to leave earlier.

Having one person do both hair and makeup will take too long- keep the first girl as hair and hire the second for makeup 🙂

There is no way even a professional can do hair AND makeup for 4 people in any short amount of time. We had 2 hair/makeup artists for 6 of us, and it took from 9am to 2pm. I would keep the first girl for hair only.
