I’m guessing you are in the Uk, I don’t know about how the court system works there.

In the states we have small claims, which is cheaper then hiring a lawyer and less formal as you can represent yourself, if you have similar system in the uk perhaps persuing it that way. I think you have to weigh your options and decide if that amount of money is worth hiring a lawyer over if you don’t have any other recourse.

Also read your contract carefully if it states in there that you may get your money back if they book someome else, then I would hold them too it. I also think depending what spelled out in your contract that their actions can definitly be a breach of contract. But again I’m don’t know uk laws so it depends.

Hopefully a phone call or meeting with a strongly worded letter and threat of a might make them back down.

It’s all a question of how far you want to take it. Check your contract. If the menu pricing was in the contract then they have breeched the contract and I’d think you should get the deposit back. Give them a call and state your case. Maybe they’ll give in. If they don’t, you could always threaten to get a lawyer if they aren’t being cooperative (that sounds horribly American, but sometimes it works).
