I was in Cancun in December and had a great time!

Take a day trip over to Isla Mujeres one day – it is a cute carribean little island. FH and I rented a scooter and “scooted” around

Go to one of the adventure parks where you can enter into a cenote or underground river. That was one of the coolest and most beautiful experiences of my life.

I advise against all-inclusive resorts because I had a friend who went to Cancun and never left her hotel!

My fiancé and I love Cancun/riviera maya so much, we are getting married down there. I’ve got plenty of recommendations, it really all depends what you want! If you want to stay in the immediate Cancun strip, Live Aqua is amazing and our absolute fav but it is pricey. Sun Palace is like the ultimate honeymoon place because it’s adults only, couples only- also amazing and pricey. There is a small ruins right in Cancun that you can walk to depending on where you stay.

We actually prefer Riviera Maya because it is not the ‘high-rise ultra modern’ feel like Cancun and the prices are a little better. I absolutely recommend the Valentin Imperial Maya- it’s amazing and reasonable in price. Also check our Excellence Riviera Maya. The Secrets Resorts are amazing too- and adults only.

Excursion wise, I HIGHLY recommend doing private tours. If you do the group tours, you spend a long time waiting on other people. I recommend Your Private Tours. They will take you to a ruins in the morning, lunch, and then a snorkeling in a cenote and also another bay/freshwater location. Tulum and Coba is awesome. But Akumal Bay is a MUST if you have time!! If you are willing to stay outside of Cancun, look at Secrets Akumal Bay. You basically can snorkel with sea turtles for free all day long!

Hopefully this helps some. As you can tell, we love Mexico 😉

I will 500% recommend Karisma Hotels. Specfically, Azul Beach in Riviera Maya, which is not far from Cancun. http://www.karismahotels.com/Hotels-Resorts-Villas/For-Everyone/Azul-Hotels I stayed there with my Fiance (before engaged), my only regret is that we didn’t wait to go there for our honeymoon!!!! I have such high standards after going there, it has been hard to put my trust in another hotel company or location because I LOVED THAT PLACE.

This one does allow children, there are others where it is couples only. I am sure they are amazing as well, but I will only speak to this place. We booked it through http://www.cheapcaribbean.com We did our flights, private transportation to and from the hotel, and the hotel itself as a package through this site. You can add on some excursions through them as well.

It was all inclusive which was amazing!!! The food was AMAZING!!! There were many many restaurants, we went to all except the Italian place. Didn’t love the Asian place as much but we loved everything else. Good pools – POOLSIDE BARS, AND THE BEACH OH MY GOD.

So there are these amazing cabanas you can get, you don’t pay ANYTHING EXTRA except $4 per person to help protect the waters (that’s for your whole time there). All you have to do is tell the desk at the beach you would like a cabana for the next day and it’s yours. You can get drinks and snacks brought over to you. They have kayaks, paddle boards and I think there was volleyball sometimes.

We didn’t go to night entertainment but we saw there was a lot and I’m sure it was great. We DID do a tequila tasting – amazing bartender at that bar inside the hotel. I now love tequila. They don’t skimp on the liquor and the staff was all really friendly and sweet, weren’t only treating us nicely until we gave tips (I have read reviews for other places mentioning this).

We went on 1 excursion which we arranged once there, I think it was called Xplor Park. We did it in the late afternoon through evening. Perfect timing as my Fiance got serious sunburn and being out in the cool air helped. It included doing ziplines (we did the last one together), riding in an amphibious car, and this paddling and not really kayak in caves. It was so wonderful! http://www.xplor.travel/

If you have ANY questions about staying there, please let me know. I would check out some of the other locations in Mexico as well. The hotel company is truly wonderful. And now I’m so spoiled I NEED A BEACHFRONT CABANA FOR MY HONEYMOON!!!

Good luck!

I also prefer the RM and also PDC over Cancun; and Cancun is still accessible. Just Cancun for me is very built up and very busy.

Happy to give you some suggestions if you narrow it down a bit eg do you want Adults Only, is a good beach important (as they vary such a lot) or are you more pool people, do you want  a large resort or a smaller more intimate one? Etc. There are so many reports it’s hard to give recs without knowing a bit more about what you want

Would suggest checking out Apple Vacations – I did a trip through them in 2013 and they were awesome.  My parents have used them multiple times and had good experiences as well.  Apple bundles trips with hotel and airfare, and include round trip transfers to/from the hotel.  I went with a group of friends to Riu Caribe in Cancun and absolutely loved it!  Our room was nice, there were lots of bars and restaurants.  The beach was nice and the pools/swim up bar were so much fun.  They even delivered drinks to you on the beach!  We worked with an Apple travel agent (you can find them on their website) via email and they took care of everything for us for free.  All inclusives are the best if you just want to relax, you pay one price and everything is taken care of!

Good luck planning! 🙂

I agree with a couple above that Riviera Maya is better price wise and it’s less touristy.  BUT Cancun has the BEST beaches!  it’s just more crowded.  We stayed at an all-inclusive on the main strip and spent one day just relaxing on the beach.  One day we went an an excursion which lasted most of the day but it was so fun!  Snorkeling, zip-lining, repelling, ruins, etc.  Then the next day we went into town to explore and went out to CocoBongos at night which is a night club but it is so entertaining!  We had a blast.

We are actually doing a spilt stay recommended by our travel agent. We are staying in Cancun at Secrets the Vine for 5 days and Secrets Akumal for 6 days. She said it will give us two different vibes.

Secrets The Vine in Cancun was AMAZING. We were there in November for a week and have no complaints at all!
