It seems like everything I want to buy for my wedding is out of stock! Paperlanternstore – out of white lanterns. Cheap burlap – out of stock. I had my heart set on these lanterns from Jamali Garden –
The Borrby lanterns from Ikea are cheaper, but I am doing a burlap, mason jars, fall, purple thing and I don’t think black, white, or galvanized will work. Has anyone ever painted one of these? Do you have any suggestions on how to get them to look more like these colors? Or where I can get lanterns like these for $20 or less?
While I am at it, anyone know of a place that is in stock to buy cheap white paper lanterns (various sizes) and where to get cheap burlap? And votives (already in clear glass)? I am just out of luck lately and everyone here is so helpful. It is starting to get frustrating! Much love brides!

If the glass is removeable, the lanterns are easy to spray paint. If not, you can still cover the glass with frogtape , paint the metal, then remove the tape from the glass.
You will get a better paint job if you wash the lanterns first with detergent or TSP.
But, given that you are going for a rustic look, I wouldn’t worry too much about that.
If you want a used look, you can sand off the edges in a few spots after you paint, so they look worn.
You could even spray a first coat of rust colored paint, so that when you sand off the black you see rust on the edges.
Buy one and do a practice session.

Any suggestions on paint to get that sort of a rustic look? I don’t want it to be just flat, or glossy.

I’d take them to a craft store and ask one of the employees… I bought the Ikea ones and I don’t think they’d hold paint well.
Have you checked Luna Bazaar? They have white paper lanterns.

Oh! And Michaels has fairly cheap white candles already in the glass. I think I bought 12 for $7.

http://www.paperlaternstore.com has white paper lanterns for .80-9.50 depending on the size (6″-36″).

Thanks all. Luna Bazaar and paperlantern store are out of stock!

Save on crafts have some sizes of white paper lanterns in stock.
Oriental trading also has some.
Asian Ideas has some , with the larger sizes being available again yesterday.
They all should have more soon. It’s likely that summer wedding season has depleted their stock.

The pictures of the lanterns you have above look black, which is exactly the same color IKEA’s Borrby comes in. I am using the Borrby lanterns for my wedding and the paint job on them don’t look worn/rustic/distressed. You can probably achieve a distressed look, which I assume you are looking for, with new paint.
I found instructions online for furniture. It might work too for the lanterns. http://www.ehow.com/way_5138573_distressed-look-painting-technique.html
Also, here is a website for a fabric store that sells burlap: http://www.voguefabricsstore.com/store/search.php?mode=search&page=1
Lastly, I noticed that your wedding is not until October of next year. If you call the store now they can probably tell you when their new shipment will arrive. Good luck!
