Hi hive – My “vision” for our tables has always been low flower arrangement surrounded by lots and lots of votives, illuminating the room in an amber color of candlelight. Since you can buy votives in bulk for decent prices, I never thought this would be an issue. Until my venue told me that due to fire hazards, all candle holders needed to cover 2.5″ ABOVE the flame of any candle. Looking up these taller votive holders quickly proved that there would be no way I could afford to use larger than normal votive holders in the qty I wanted (plus i didnt like how they looked).
My question to you all is, do I call the venue’s bluff and just get the standard candle votives assuming all venues say this? Or do I ask the venue if this is a hard rule (i.e. do they really need to be 2.5″ from the flame? Is 1″ not enough!!??)? My concern with option one is obviously that I buy the candles and dont get to use them the day of and my concern with option #2 is that if she says the rule is hard, she might be keeping an eye on our decor if I did decide to risk it…
What should I do? Anyone ever hear something similar from their venue?

It’s been my experience that venues don’t mess around with things like this. If that’s their rule, you should respect it.

Can you just use tealights instead of votive candles in the votive holders? They will have to be replaced during the reception but you can designate someone to do that.

@ julies1949 – yes, thats a good tip and I did look into it. Unfortunately, even with the short tea lights, standard votive holders @ 2.5″ tall woudlnt be a full 2.5″ above the flame..

If you need to a get a fire permit for your venue then they are dead serious about this. Our venue has the same inch requirement. I think they will enforce this.

I wouldn’t risk getting caught because then they might charge you for breaking a rule or something. If you get a fine it might even cost more that it would have been to get the taller votives. I would personally fork out the money it its in your budget.

These ones are 3″ tall and I don’t think you would notice the difference.

What about this?? So then IF something happened the water would make the flame go out…
Some flowers in the center with maybe some wine glasses with water and floating candles around it…
