if the OP has conditions on her student visa that say she cannot work, then freelancing isn’t allowed. Anything you’re paid to do is work, even if you’ve got no formal employer. The exception would be only where her potential work would  meet whatever “education related” condition is attached to her visa. If discovered, working without a proper visa could get her deported and/or rejected for future residency/citizenship.

clarissabee:  Who is actually paying. You went from saying your mom paid for these things to saying you did. Inconsistent. (But I think I’ve got it cleared now.)

And yes. We get it. It’s expensive. That’s called being an adult. It’s not exclusive to where you live.

clarissabee:  You are missing the whole point of where I was going. But whatever, it’s off the original topic at this point anyways.

But seriously, quit saying how expensive everything is. WE. KNOW. We happen to live lives too. Imagine those of us with low income jobs and even MORE expenses than you.

Nobody has called you a bad person. What are you talking about?

You have been told several times that you can get a “decent car” for well under 15K. Why is it so hard for you to accept that advice from people who are mostly from North America and know what cars cost? The reason luxury cars have been mentioned is your outrageous acceptable price point is what people pay for high end vehicles.

I don’t know why you insist on acting as if you are the only person who knows the cost of living.

If you choose not to listen and become defensive when people give you advice that you asked for, I’m afraid that not even a therapist will be able to help you improve your life.

I’m not sure why you even ask things. You never listen. You just make excuses. Have fun doing life.

mrswhitecat:  Maybe that’s because they have really crappy cars in her home country (France, correct?) and only luxury cars can last for 9 years? Just spit balling. I didn’t know Europe had so many issues with the durability of their cars, but they must, so there you go. My husband has been driving a compact “cheap” car for 14 years with no problems at all. When he goes in for regular stuff no one is shocked that it’s fine. Cars that are taken care of last a long time. And he has some sort of weird attachment to this POS, but hey, gets him from A to B and has good gas mileage, and his self worth isn’t tied up in how expensive his car is.

I also feel that you ask for a lot of advice on here, but seem to already have the answer you are hoping for in mind, and when you are challenged about your thinking errors you tend to brush it off or make excuses. You are getting real world, person-tested advice here and Yet you keep rambling on about the same things, because you aren’t getting the answers you want. TBH, the chances of you being able to remain in this country are pretty slim after you graduate unless you get married to a citizen. Your degree probably isn’t one that will get you a job where they will sponsor you. I’m sorry. I have read a lot of great advice given to you on many different threads and you appear to ignore it all. I wish you the best and hope things work out for you.

You could be right. It’s just that car quality is obviously different in North America and the Bees know what they are talking about.

I’m very happy that we will have no car payment by October 2017. My husband drives a Ford Focus and he plans on driving that until he needs a new car. Like you fiance, my husband doesn’t care about having a luxury car as long as it works well and looks presentable. We would rather invest, save and go on vacations.
