I’m posting this anonymously, but it’s so amazing I have to share.
My parents are very generously paying for our wedding. My mother has had lots of input in my wedding and I welcome it with open arms, but one thing I will not have at my wedding is smooth jazz.
I had researched several DJs, but my mom wanted to use one of their friends (who has done like 1000 weddings or something, he’s amazing) so I said cool. then I said..
“Just no smooth jazz.” because I freaking hate it, I just do, it doesn’t represent me or my fiance, we have pretty specific musical tastes, and I think our guests will do just fine without it. There are plenty of other genres of music.
mother: “What? Not even just a little?”
me: “no thanks.”
mother: “uh, who’s wedding is this?”
hold the phone.
but the real winner:
mother: “can’t it be just a little bit mine?“
and when I looked at her in complete shock, she called me a bridezilla.
kill me now.

Oh that’s funny. You could decorate your venue to look like the inside of an elevator!

I hate smooth jazz too :P. My mom keeps trying to stick country songs in ours, but Fiance hates country with a passion. Can you stick one song in there and time a bathroom break? That’s what I’m going to do :).

Oh geez, I hate the mentality that if someone is helping you pay for it, the wedding becomes theirs. If you can’t generously help someone pay for their wedding and let it be theirs, don’t offer to help!

Yikes! Maybe you can have smooth jazz during cocktail hour where you won’t have to hear it?

Well, he who pays, plans. It sucks, but money isn’t free, and it very very rarely comes free without strings 🙂

LOL!! Sorry, I know it’s a tricky situation, but that made me laugh. My dad LOVES that easy listening kind of music (think Air Supply and Kenny G). Anytime I’m in a car with him I seriously contemplate just taking my chances jumping into traffic rather than listening to “I Can See Clearly Now” for the 3rd time in an hour.
It’s your wedding. Don’t let the smooth jazz madness spread. Stay strong!!
