My mom bought my wedding dress the first time we went shopping together last year. I hadn’t heard about the bee, dress designers or anything. The dress was a total extra gift (she’d already given us a cash gift to go towards the wedding) and with alterations will have cost over $500. My original dress budget was somewhere around $300. I love Sabelle, it’s like the perfect version of what I want my dress to be, but it’s way over my budget, and it’s (probably) too late to do a chinese replica. Plus, I’m pretty sure my mom would be devastated if I told her I wanted a different dress (I even tested the waters a few months ago about thinking about different dresses, and she shut that down pretty quick). However, I just found a $200 replica in my size in the classifieds. OMG. What do I do? Here is my dress:

I think you should get the dress of your dreams! You could always wear both dresses; one for the ceremony and the other for the reception…that way I think your mum wouldn’t be heartbroken.

Hmmmm, I don’t want to be too forward here or put down the replica. But the fabric on yours is just beautiful and flows so nicely on you. Maybe a sweetheart neckline on your dress and some added beading would make you happy?

I am in the same boat. My mom didnt pay, but she did help pick it out and kind of has taken the dress personally.
But after I was home (even on the first day) It didnt feel like my dress, it felt like hers. I just bought a replica on ebay last week, and is supposed to be here in 10 days. I tried telling my mom softly I was thinking about it right before I purchased it and she gave me a death glare. I am not sure if I will even get to wear my new hopfully fabulous dress. I am thinking once she sees me in it, if it is genuenly great, she will loosen up.
*crosses fingers for both of us*

I completely agree with RR – could you have yours altered sightly to make it a bit more like the Sabelle?
By The Way – you look beyond stunning in the one you have

What would happen if you were to very calmly, simply, and strongly share with your mother that you’ve found the dress of your dreams elsewhere and it is what makes you happy for your wedding day. If you test the waters in trying to tell her, you aren’t really telling her and she will sense that right away and not want to hear the rest. But if you tell her you’ve made your decision (of course, with heavy consideration), that’s a different story. You realize it is an extra expense and you are paying for it. Or, you could be a two dress bride and compromise. I went through a similar situation with my parents and you can read about it here:
Surprise, Mom and Dad…uh, I have a new dress…
Both dresses are lovely. I like the fabric on the first dress and its fit on you, but I can see with the proper steaming and fit on you, the second dress would be beautiful on you, too. Good luck!

Btw, maybe you can use that money to have to do the pickup on one side of your dress and add some lace?! With the sweetheart neckline, maybe that will make you feel like it’s your dress.

Keep yours, its original not “copy” or “fake”. I am not sure how the replica feels but it looks a bit cheap.

Sabelle is a very popular dress. Have you checked all the preowned sites? Or called local salons to see if they will sell the sample? I do not think that $200 is a good price for a replica. That is usually about the price for a new replica.
As far as your mother is concerned, I can understand why she would be hurt. However, you can’t spend the rest of your life regretting it.

Thank you, everyone, for all the feedback and suggestions! I just checked used sites, and authentic dresses start around $500 minimum. I hadn’t thought about altering my dress to match Sabelle better; that is a really good idea & wouldn’t hurt my mom’s feelings at all. The thing I like most about the dress is the skirt (alterable) and the beading on the bust (probably not alterable w/o paying a lot, but the sweetheart neckline is a great idea). I also haven’t tried on Sabelle, so maybe it will look awful on me. LOL. Ruching doesn’t tend to flatter me. I think I will try to make an appointment at a salon that has it. Maybe I will look horrid in it & that will cement my decision. 😛

Well, I am glad i found this post because after mine, I kinda felt that everyone in the world HATED the Sabelle. I obviously LOVE that dress but I think your is lovely. I do think that a sweatheart would be a beautiful choice. I personally don’t love the replica but I think 200 dollars isn’t too bad to loose.

I think it looks like your dress is made of much nicer material and the construction of it is much higher quality than that of the replica, I wouldn’t do it!

Honestly I think your dress is so much more gorgeous than the Sabelle! I agree with PP about adding a sweetheart neckline to your dress. And I would ask your seamstress but you may also be able to add that “pull” where it has lace showing undernearth. But I wouldn’t buy a replica, your dress looks like it is much better quality, and that sounds like a lot for a replica dress to me!
