We did both Capri and Pompei last September. I loved both but I would take Capri, it is georgeous! It is easy to get to Sorrento from Rome as well Via the train. I would also check that out as well.

llevinso:  Check out Sorrento and the Amalfi coast as well. The Amalfi coast is the one thing we didn’t do and now I want to go back to see it.

I have been to both. I would recommend Pompeii as a day trip. Capri is beautiful! I would definitely recommend spending a little more time there and maybe staying on the island for a night or so if you had the time.

Been to both, personally Capri was my favourite, it was stunning. I went in September too and the weather was amazing. If architecture/history are more your interest however, Pompeii or as another PP suggested, Herculaneum are both fascinating places to go.

Sorry if you’ve already told us in your posts, but I think it depends where you’re from and how likely you are to be able to return to that part of the world.

As you’re on a honeymoon, I do really think Capri is your best choice, and I LOVE history. Pompeii is fantastic but it’s not a place to relax and enjoy and it’s not a place of natural beauty, it’s more akin to visiting an open air museum.

Capri is expensive, but breathtaking for scenery and very romantic. Plus you get to see how the rich live and be one of them for a day!  Send me a private message if you want to know a beautiful ‘secret’ restaurant to visit.

However, if you are from, say, the US/Australia and this is a once in a lifetime and you studied ancient history or archaeology at university and it really is a big thing to you, then Pompeii would possibly edge it.

im0502:  Yep, in many ways Positano beats Capri. It was just so nice to be there. It has honeymoon written all over it.

I’ve done both.  Pompei was my most memorable part of Italy,  I was just asstonded by the sophistication of a society so ancient and the preservation of the site.   I did Capri as a day trip from Naples and with that I didn’t have a lot of time to really enjoy it.  In a day I got a tour around the island,  a trip to the blue grotto (loved this) and then some beach time.  I never even made it to the town.  If you’re coming all the way from Rome for this experience you would have even less time.  If I were to go back I’d stay in Capri a night to really enjoy it.

My vote is therefore Pompei

I just saw your update about being able to do two day trips.  Suggestion,  why not stay down in Naples to avoid the back and forth to Rome over those two days? Naples is cheaper since you’re budget concious and you’ll end up with more time in one of those locations (I vote for making the longer day Capri).  The best pizza is also in Naples (just be careful of pick pockets here)

I would suggest you skip Pompeii and go to Ostia Antica instead! Much better!

Its only a 20-30 minute train journey but its much better. The nice thing about it is there is much more shade, often a bit of a breeze and is a lot less buys as less people know about it.

You would have to spend less time travelling there too. So many people dont get time to go and miss it out to go to Pompeii and do not realise what they are missing!

Id actually suggest a trip to Tivoli even more! Google it and you will see how beautiful it is.
