@rachie576:  Nothing against Ford, but I have had several, yes, several friends with Ford Focus’s that have literally fallen.apart. But I have 2 friends with Mazda 3’s and 3 friends with Mazda 6’s that LOVE them.

personally, I have a brand new kia and love it!

I just bought a 2013 Civic, so I guess I’m pretty biased. I chose the Honda because I want a car that I can keep trouble-free for 7-10 years. While a lot of people say that Ford has gotten better recently, I am still skeptical. At the end of the day, reliability is tough to predict, so I decided to go with the Honda because they have such a great reputation.

ETA: Another factor in my decision is my current car, a 2001 Honda Accord, has 133k miles on it and hasn’t needed any repairs other than standard maintanence.

Honda pretty much beats out any car for reliability. Ford’s quality, after a few year streak of awesome, is taking a nose dive again (look that up in Consumer Reports). Mazda is made by Ford.

    Honda Civic for the win!

OH! I didn’t even see that Honda Civic was an option. I drove my 07 civic for 50K miles and it was awesome! I looooved that thing. <3

I bought a 2008 honda civic last year and it’s great and all, but I voted mazda 3. I drove one when when I had to be in a rental after my car was totalled and before the honda civic, and I just fell in love with the mazda. I couldnt find a used one in my price range at the time or I would have bought one.

Oh and also, my 2008 honda civic has had an issue with rough idle/rumbling….it may be something with the driveshaft…not all hondas are completely worry free, but it is still a great choice in terms of reliability. I had no idea mazda was made by ford, as I would never recommend a ford to anyone, but I have a feeling the mazda 3 still may be worth a shot. Just read lots of consumer reviews ๐Ÿ™‚

Both Mazda 3 and Honda Civic are at the top of my ideal car list. I currently drive a Scion, so I didn’t end up too far off… According to the research I did on the reliability of both, you can’t go wrong. I, like the other posters, still don’t trust Ford. I had one, it died tragically prematurely.

I just wanted to pop in and mention that Mazda is not made by Ford. It’s apparently a really common misconception, because there are tons of answers online echoing the same thing: Ford just owned 33% of Mazda at one brief point, but they’re selling off those shares anyway. Good luck!!

I’m biased because I have only and will only ever drive American cars ๐Ÿ˜‰ Plus, my dad is one of the engineers that designed the engine in the focus and he really loves the engine.

FWIW, i drive a 2012 fusion with the same engine as a focus its about a year old and has 27k miles on it and no issues. We turned in my 2009 fusion (same engine) with 90k miles and that too had no issues other than scheduled maintanence. We also have a 1998 Explorer with 200k on it and a 1998 taurus with 170k on it and neither of those have had any issues other than general maintanence!

@Taeyers:  not owned by ford, but ford did a lot/most of the engine work. My dad works for ford and does alot with mazda ( and even though they are selling off, they are still working together) and the 4 cylinder engines

I just just just purchased a 2012 ford focus and I love it, but it’s too new for me to give an accurate, unbiased review on yet.  I was checking out the same cars as you and I decided on the focus because of the favorable reviews, the good looks, and the price tag which was a couple grand cheaper than the other options.

Out of the three you asked about, I would vote for the Honda Civic too. My DH’s 2001 Honda Civic never gave us any trouble. We just sold it in 2012.

If you’re looking at another dependable make/model, you could try the Toyota Corolla.
