I’m psyched to find this thread!  I am starting to look around at cars to replace my 2002 Honda Civic… getting old!  OP, did you start test driving?  I think a Subaru Forester or a Honda CR-V are at the top of my list.

@CakeyP:  I actually test drove a 2009 CR-V back when I was looking at cars. My first (and still favorite) car I owned was a Honda, but for some reason, I didn’t like the CR-V. I bought a Toyota RAV4 instead. Have you tried searching for yout specific car on http://www.autotrader.com ? That is where I found my RAV4 with a third row seat! Even some of the Toyota dealers didn’t know it was an option. You can evrn search by color on that site!

@CakeyP:  hmmm, did not know that about the Subaru maintenance costs being higher… I’ll have to look into that.  I am looking forward to test driving both Subaru and Honda to compare…

Also, I agree with you, RAV4s used to be smaller!  I actually really dislike the smaller version, but I like the redesigned ones.

I just reread one of my posts. I started offering a price that was 10% below the asking price. Not 3.

@CakeyP:  Can one of you be a cosigner instead of having both of you signing for the vehicle?  That is crazy that the cars keep getting sold! You’ll find one!

@CakeyP:  First, don’t mention a trade in, don’t explain much of things on your end. They will try and size you up and see where they will have wiggle room with you. Go in for test drives and make sure you are clear on what it is  you want in the vehicle you are going to purchase. Go to more than one dealership and always walk out after the first visit and leave your number. They will try and get you to finance through them, they will try and low ball you on your trade in, they will try and squeeze every dollar they can out of you. So pick a price point and as long as it’s reasonable, stick with it. I had to go to 4 dealerships and walk out numerous times to get my car at the price point I needed. I was the worst kind of customer, I had a preapproval already from my own bank, I had no trade in and all I needed to know was if they could give me the car I wanted at the price I wanted. There was no wiggle room for them really. Car buying can be really exhausting lol.

As a side note….I can’t stand car sales people. I witnessed something when I was waiting at one of the dealerships when I was car shopping that just really ruined my opinion of car sales people. There was a sales man at his desk and his phone rang. I could hear the guy on the phone. he wanted to know what the trade in value of his car was because he forgot what the dealer had told him earlier in the day when he had negotiated his deal, he said he was ready to come in and sign but wanted to run the numbers by his wife so he was double checking the value they gave him earlier. The sales man pulled out some papers and found where it said “trade in value” in big black marker. It clearly said $10,000. He goes “$7000 sir” to which the man was like “wait… no! they told me $10,000 I thought! that’s way off from what I have written down here” and he insisted he speak with management because of th edifference. then the sales man was like “oh wait… i was reading the wrong line, yes sir it’s $10,000.”  When he hung up his coworker laughed and was like “well it was a good try!” and they giggled about it. It just really made me dislike sales people. I understand they need money too but they are just so sleazy about everything. Ok Rant over! lol
