dianaj17 :  I’m a little confused. If they can hit their head on the front seat it sounds like they’ve outgrown the seat? A child’s head should never be higher than the seat! Also cost doesn’t necessarily equal safety. The chicco keyfit 30 is consistently rated one of the safest seats on the market and is pretty mid-range pricewise.

I’m a complete psycho about car safety so I get it. My 2.5 year old will be rear facing as long as humanely possible and she consistently complains that the straps are “too tight mama!” even though they are exactly as tight as they need to be. I once strapped my nephew into his bucket seat and told my friend “he’s in but the straps need an extra tug once you get in the car” and she said I already did it tighter than she usually did! Gah! Strap those babies in snug!

There aren’t very many that truly go from birth to booster seat safely (like 1 or 2?).  Most convertible seats (what your niece needs) can be used for infants but I don’t find them for infants because you have to wake your baby up if they fall asleep when getting them out of the car. Car seats also expire and you don’t know when you will be pregnant or give birth.

Buy a cheaper convertible seat for your niece for now (you can get decent ones for $100).  Worry about an infant car seat when you are pregnant.
