Hi Bees,
So right after work today, I go to my Barre3 workout class. I come back outside to the parking garage only to find my window smashed in and my work laptop gone! I had hidden it in the back, on the ground with a black coat over it plus I have pretty dark windows. I’m just bummed, feel violated and upset. I can never imagine ruining someone’s personal property like that. I’m now worried that my work will make me pay to buy a new one. What are your thoughts? I mean its not their fault, but I can’t afford a new laptop on top of a car rental (which is crazy money, $140 a day for an economy car because of the car rental demand from the holiday tomorrow), deductible from insurance, Etc. All the auto body places will be closed tomorrow and Im pretty positive they’ll have to order the window and I probably won’t get my car back till mid/end next week. I’m just so sad…I just started this job 3 weeks ago (and was so thankful to be working again because the last 6 months I’ve going through health issues, lost my job, had medical bills up to my eyeballs) so I’m just thankful someone hired me with my health disabities.
Do you think I will have to pay for my work laptop?

Hopefully the company has the laptop insured or maybe your auto insurance will cover it. You reported the break-in to the police, right?

Ahh! How scary! Make sure you have filed a police report. In that case, NO, they definitely should not make you pay for it. That’s why companies have insurance.

You shouldn’t have to pay for the laptop. Or the rental car for that matter – someone rear ended me a couple years ago and while that was getting repaired, insurance covered a rental for like 3 weeks.
I can totally relate to how pissed you are. My car was broken into like 6 months after I got it, they busted the lock/door handle on the driver’s side. And there was nothing to steal – what a waste!! I was furious – if I had caught that lowlife in the act I would have killed him.

So sorry this happened! I would think your insurance would pay for it…you might have to cover the deductible though.

@CourtneyB: I am so sorry this happened to you. Ugh, people. I do however find it a little weird that the thief knew to dig around on the floor and uncover the laptop. It’s almost as if they were watching you leave or something. :/
In any case, your work will not make you pay for a new one. When I worked for an accounting firm and had a work laptop, I know my firm actually had them insured in case of theft, etc.. As long as you have a police report as evidence, you should be off the hook. It’s still scary and a bummer though. 🙁

@CourtneyB: I’m so sorry this happened to you! I had the same thing happen to me – in my parent’s driveway no less, and two days after my birthday. It’s such a total violation and makes you just feel so completely out of control! My work laptop was stolen as well, and my company didn’t make me pay to replace it. I think as long as you’re not reporting your laptop stolen every few weeks, you should be completely fine. At the end of the day, sh*t happens and companies know that. They have insurance and other reserves to cover losses like this.
I hope you’re able to get your window fixed quickly! Ever since this happened to me, I always take my laptop with me when I have it – into the restaurants, doctor’s office, gym, etc. I’m completely paranoid now that something is going to get stolen again and I’m going to have a smashed window to deal with.
