i think it’s practical. a lot of people bring cards, it gives them a place to put them!

It’s not selfish. I’ve seen it at every wedding I’ve been to. You have so many different options. You can also use a birdcage. It’ll be a lot better than worrying about handing the cards to your family and gathering them at the end.

I think a card box is a good idea.  People will already have their gift when they arrive, so it’s not like you’re asking for envelopes.  For those that do bring envelopes, there will be a safe place to put them in.

I think no one will think twice about it because it’s such a standard thing to see at a wedding reception (unless yours is, like, comically ginormous, or something).  It’s also just very convenient.  At my cousin’s wedding, there was no card box and everybody just starting piling them on the table by the guest book.  By the end of the night, they were falling off and all over the floor.

I would do one so that none of them get lost, plus you hear so many sotries about things getting stolen at weddings anymore.

Definitely not selfish, you should and need to plan for a place for all the cards you will receive, if not, you take the risk of losing them in the transport of gifts at the end of the evening.  Here is an alternative option that looks a bit nicer than some of the "old school" boxes.
