I have a seventeen-year-old niece who is due in August and I would like to send her a little care package with things that a soon-to-be mom might appreciate. Not being a parent myself, I am not really sure what would be good to include. I know she is feeling a little overwhelmed (and very pregnant!) right now and I want to help out a little bit even though I am out of state. What little products/books/sentiments were helpful to you when you were pregnant? Any ideas on what might be especially nice for a young, first-time mom? Thank you so much for your help!

@radical4peace: when my best friend was in the hospital after having her first baby, i brought her a care package with comfy pajamas, slippers, magazines, and anti-stress body oils. also, i brought her a giant cupcake to celebrate getting over her gestational diabetes!

I’ve been getting a lot of pedicures because the place I go to spends time giving you a calf and foot massage. My feet have been swollen and killing me at times. Plus it is just a time to sit and relax.

I am making an assumption and I may be way off base here, but she is 17 and even if she has help (boyfriend? mom?), I am betting she will be struggling financially.
I think buying her the necessities would be best, but buy her the next stage up (stage 1), not newborn because they outgrow those so fast and everyone buys her them. Wipes, formula if she plans on using it etc.
Maybe set her up for a monthly delivery of diapers through Amazon’s subscribe and save and she can tell you what size each month she is using so its the right type.

Not sure how well you know her, but we sent my pregnant sister BioOil (to minimize potential stretch marks), Nutella (for cravings), some cute maternity tops, a pedi GC, and a Pregnancy Fitness magazine (bc we knew she would like it).

These are all great ideas–thank you so much! Luckily, my niece does have lots of support from her parents/sisters, but I would like to help out from afar. I really like the pampering ideas as well as practical things like baby necessities. Right now, I have some natural mama stuff (teas, baths, etc.) and probably a prenatal massage. I’m also looking into some kind of sling or hip-looking (to the extent possible, haha) nursing cover. She/her family is definitely on the natural side of things so trying to get her some stuff she might appreciate but wouldn’t be able to get for herself. Any moms have good tips for the best slings/nursing covers? I’ve seen cute stuff on etsy but not sure what actually works best.

I made one for my cousin for when she came home from the hospital. Dry shampoo, hair ties, hand sanitizer, lotion, facial wipes, candy, red bull (for the daddy), extra burp cloths, eye mask and back massager.

FWIW, I didn’t bother with the nursing cover after like a week. It sounds like you have a great idea of what to get for her – the massage would be awesome! I would also say some cute, and BIG pajamas…being 9 months pregnant in august will be uncomfortable, and she’ll love having something cute and comfy to sleep in and they could also be nice for post-delivery.

Honestly I think what a 17yr old who is about to have a baby would need most is probably more practical stuff than pampering stuff. I would send nappies/formula etc. I am assuming she isn’t working and is still in school etc.

I’m due in Sept and if someone sent me a pedicure or massage (even a post-natal one) right now I would love them forever! I think a little bit of pampering and a little bit of something practical, like diapers or burp clothes, would be a lovely gift!
