Career advancement while expecting first baby…wise move?

No I wouldn’t. The pay isn’t worth the time sacrifice to me, especially when I’m not overly passionate about the job. You have a good gig for baby right now. Having 14 hours away three days a week will be hard enough as it is.

armywifetobe :  I’d pass. It’s not worth the extra commuting away from your baby and time spent commuting. You will spend more in gas and daycare than the raise is worth AND be sad that you don’t see your baby is often.

I would normally agree that you need to put career advancement first, but no. I don’t think you should take it.

The cons far outweigh the pros here. 60 cents is no where near enough to make up for missing out on so much time with your baby. It sounds like the raise wouldn’t even be enough to cover the additional daycare. Which, as an aside,  have you found a pay by the day daycare? Most won’t do that. You may be better off going with a Tuesday Thursday nanny.

Life is too short to spend that much time driving. And missing out on time with your baby. The fact that you won’t even get a raise… No. That’s barely even career advancement; more like a change in title that makes your life more difficult.

Not unless they were offering me a substantial raise.

Also, I DID take a new position at around 4 months pregnant because it was the right move career wise for me. It’s been wonderful but also very hard to balance a new position and all that entails while being pregnant and tired and trying to get things ready for baby. While it was the right move for me, I didn’t realize just how hard it would be. So, ya know, caution.

armywifetobe :  Ok, then definitely no. It sounds like this change in position doesn’t benefit you in any way.

armywifetobe :  I wouldn’t do it, pregnant or not. The money is not worth it, and there will be other (better) opportunities to advance.

No, you have much better hours now. Being gone every night at dinner and bedtime sounds pretty awful, the pay isn’t worth it, and all you would really get is pressure to succeed in two new roles at the same time.

armywifetobe :  omg I’m so jealous of your daycare setup! Ours has different rates depending on how many days a week you reserve and if you don’t use a day you still pay that weekly rate without any credits. We had 5 days a week temporarily at $415/week and now we have a couple months where we only have 4 days/week at $394/week. We WANT full time care so it’s annoying that we had to scramble to get coverage for that other day and it only saves us $21/week. Thankfully she won’t be “borrowing” days from another family come the summer and we will have 5 dedicated days that can’t be taken away after that.

armywifetobe :  Nope not worth it to me.  60 cents is nothing, is this 60 cents on your salary, or on your hourly?  Either way it’s not worth it to me to lose the time with the baby.  Besides, 6am-6pm isn’t too bad honestly.  it means you’d leave before she woke possibly and get back home before she went down depending on when you decide to put her down.

armywifetobe :  Boston. Infant daycare here is really hard to come by because we have such strict local regulations. Don’t get me wrong I love that they are so strict, but it means that there are far less spots compared to toddlers.

Those hours are awful for having a kid, IMO. Being home for dinner and bed time is really important to me, personally.

And yeah you’re really lucky that you have a daycare that charges by the day! Ours you would have to pay for the full week regardless of if your child was there or not.
