I’m manning a career fair table at a high school here in a few weeks. I’ve never done this before, and any job presentations I’ve done in schools lead to two conclusions: everyone wants to know if journalists make lots of money (hahahaha) and nobody wants to be a journalist.
I’m a reporter a small community newspaper, have a diploma in photojournalism, & should probably cover some other aspects of my workplace – graphic design, newspaper production, advertising and editing, photography.
Any hints on how to engage students? Cool stuff to show off/hand out (it will have to be free/already in existence – can’t buy new stuff so we don’t have things like pens or whatever)? I’m thinking about bringing some of my camera gear, some newspapers, maybe some info from my college if I can get some (is that weird or biased though?), and I am willing to haul in my own iMac from home if there’s a good reason.
