This happened to a friend of mine selling his couch on Craigslist. Be very careful – after he figured out the scam and refused to continue the transaction, he received death threats and had to call the police. Never, ever, ever give your address or any other personal information before you’re absolutely sure that you’re not dealing with a scammer.

Good for you for catching it!

I know this an old thread but I just have to say I had a horrible experience with a bridal store. The owner is a friend of the mother of a (former) friend of mine and that’s how we met. I went in not sure what to expect. I found what I believed was the dress I really wanted. I gave a large deposit and began waiting. Six months passed and no call. So I called three times. Each time i got a different excuse for why the dress wasn’t there. At that point I was fairly convinced I had been scammed. A few weeks later my fiancé and I went to see what was going on. After pretending like she didn’t know who I was she claimed someone had told her the wedding was cancelled. That made absolutely no sense to me as I couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t contact me to offer me the money back. She said she’d have the refund within a week. Seven days later, no check. We returned and she changed her story again. We finally found out not only did she have no intention of refunding the money but she never ordered the dress. Stay away from Sei Bella Bridal in Rhode Island. She will only take your money and run and try to find a way to make it look like it’s your fault.
