I love the idea of a warm beach vacation for our honeymoon, and FH wants us to go somewhere where we can try out a lot of fun water activities. The Caribbean is obviously closer and less expensive than say, Fiji, particularly when looking at late August prices. The thing is, I know prices are lower at this time because of the crazy humidity (which I’m fine with) and the fact that it’s during hurricane season. Being that we’ve lived in New Orleans since 2005, we know all to well the potential dangers there. Has anybody done their honeymoon in the Caribbean (or Gulf, etc) during hurricane season (esp August/September)? Any horror stories or advice? Are the chances really bad enough that I should give up the dream, or would it be overreacting to avoid such a huge area?

We took a 7 day Western Caribbean cruise October 17-24th 2010. At one point we were outrunning Hurricane Richard! There was one night where the boat was swaying a bit more and it concerned me. Then one day, late in the afternoon, in Honduras there was a 15 minute torential downpour. Overall though it was an awesome vacation!

I personally have not but one of my best friends did. She and her husband honeymooned in Jamaica towards the end of August 2008. They had planned on only being there for 4 days and 3 nights but that turned into 7 days and 6 nights due to one bitch of a hurricane that hit while they were there. The day they were leaving the storm was preparing to his the island. Nothing had even happened yet but the airport shut down due to the threat. On the way back to the resort all hell broke loose.
My friends are not well off. They pretty much scraped together every penny they had to afford the 4 day Honeymoon that they were taking. Before they were allowed to check back into their room they had to find a way to pay for it. Their travel agent ended up putting down her own credit card for them to stay at the resort. It was a nightmare. They didn’t have power and there was literally nothing to do. She said that just sat around and drank (all inclusive resort) all day.
I’m the kind of person who would risk it and book the Honeymoon during hurricane season. As long as you have trip insurance, you’re covered. We’re HM’ing in Bermuda in October. Even though they are technically part of the Caribbean, the same rules don’t really apply. Bermuda gets just as much rain as the east coast does during hurricane season. I’m not sure where you’re located but maybe that would be an option for your honeymoon. The island is beyond amazing.

I went on a cruise at the end of august and we were in the Western caribbean, including Cozumel, Costa Rica and Panama. We had light rain in Costa Rica for a little bit, but had beautiful weather the rest of the day, but Panama was terrible. It was cloudy all day and at the time we were leaving there was a terrible thunderstorm and the weather was very choppy. I wasn’t feeling so great, but on a cruise we were able to get out of it. I know you aren’t talking about cruising, but during this time you can sometimes expect rain for a little bit and then beautiful weather the rest of the day. I agree with CaitMarae and get insurance and you should be fine. And maybe southern caribbean like Aruba might be a good idea since it is not affected by the Hurricanes.
