My fiance and are are getting married in NY in Sept and would like to do a Caribbean honeymoon but are worried about it being hurricane season and the weather being horrible. I know we can purchase insurance, but has anyone been during mid-Sept? What was your experience?
We’re looking at St.Lucia, Dominica (the island, not DR) or Costa Rica. Thanks!

I heard the further south you go, the better. St. Lucia and Costa Rica would probably be better than Dominican as far as weather.

It’s kind of a crapshoot – our cruise honeymoon was scheduled for PR, St Thomas and ST Maarten in Oct 2010. We hit rain in the first two and went to Jamaica to escape the hurricane and it was beautiful and sunny!

We went to Antigua on our honeymoon. It was the last week September, though we had some
rain(15 minute down pours and 1 afternoon of rain) but no hurricanes. Aruba is another island that is out of the hurricane belt. I think you should be fine with the places listed above.

We went to Jamaica for a week the end of September. The weather was BEAUTIFUL and we later found out that hurricanes very rarely hit the western side of the island (Negril, which is where we were). I would talk to a travel agent or do research on your own. Just because you’re in the Caribbean doesn’t automatically mean hurricanes. We did have rain every afternoon for about an hour but it was beautiful rain and gave us a much needed afternoon break to go rest in our room.

Trip insurance might be a good idea, depending on how much you think you’ll lose over cancelled flights or evacuations. You can usually get policies when you book.
We usually vacation around that time of year in the OBX. We’ve never been hurricaned out (it was really close this last year – evacuations the week before) but I seem to remember every year something has been brewing further south.
