Hi bees! My Fiance and I want a soak up the sun, relaxing 5 night honeymoon in August next year in Mexico or the Caribbean and we’re looking for any help for resort suggestions.
Were looking for:
-calm, clear water swimmable beachfront resort
-a romantic/luxurious suite – maybe Bali style looking, poster bed, big bathtub, a terrace, or plunge pool or outdoor shower
-ac and hopefully a tv too
-quieter atmosphere, not too crowded or party scene, we’re not big drinkers at all, but some activities or a town to explore by renting a car would be nice
any recommendations or links to other threads would be greatly appreciated!

I stayed at barcelo maya in Mayan riviera south of Cancun. The part of the resort we stayed in wasn’t as luxurious as you want but there is a “palace” or maybe “deluxe” part of the resort to look into or other hotels in that area. DH and I loved the area, and the Barcelo had awesome pools with swim up bars, beach is sometimes very swimable depending on wind. I think that August is the height of hurricane season in that area, you might check into that.
also – in Mexico there are a lot of options for shuttles and cabs or buses if you are adventurous for touring around. Do research on tripadvisor.com for wherever you decide to go.

where will you be traveling from? Do you have a particular budget in mind?

We loved the Couples Resort chain in Jamaica, and it checks off just about every one of your wishes. We stayed at Tower Isle. It’s the smallest of their four hotels. It was very relaxing, and not much of a party feel. I think they had a club/lounge area if you wanted to partake in the evenings, but we were honestly so exhausted every night that we didn’t check it out. The only thing that would concern me is that you’re trying to book during prime hurricane season. I’d definitely get trip insurance wherever you decide to go.

we’re from NYC and we want to stay within 5-6 thousand.

We went to Privilege Aluxes on Isla Mujeres, Mexico and it was fantastic. We didn’t have a suite but the suites do have private pools!

We went to Aruba in June and the beaches and water there were absolutely beautiful. It’s fairly easy to get to from NYC. It doeas have some nightlife, casinos, etc but overall is very laid back.
We also stayed at the Grande Luxxe in Nuevo Vallarta recently and it was stunning- one of the most beautiful resorts I’ve stayed at. It has a lot of the amenities you are looking for. Capella Pedregal in Cabo would also be a perfect honeymoon destination and might be within your budget for 5 nights. However, I don’t think the beaches at either of these locations are exactly what you are looking for, and flights might be more challenging from NYC.

We did Couples Tower Isle this past summer, it was lackluster and I asked my boss for a mulligan. Our first room was over the main pool area, and entirely too noisy. We moved, the AC was broken in the new room, and the only option they gave us was to move back to the first room. Much of the staff left something to be desired as well, like we were bothering them or something. Between the room change and AC issues, we feel like we lost two days of vacation. We took a shopping trip and the vendors were rudely pushy (also, I didn’t understand carved giraffes in Jamaica).
We left a generally negative review with them, and have not heard back. The food was really good, and the entertainment staff were all very nice.
Two years ago we went to Secrets Punta Cana in Dominican Republic, it was awesome. The staff were generally super-friendly, we’d paid for the upgraded room/service, so we were a bit more secluded, and had some private areas to hang out, or could go to the main area. I recommended the chain to my coworker, and he went to the one in Akumal Mexico and loved it. The main trouble here was there was a big kelp outbreak, so the beaches weren’t the nicest.

Try Excellence Riviera Cancun!! We are going to Excellence Playa Mujeres for ours, it’s a more modern layout. Riviera Cancun sounds right up your style!

the Hyatt Zilara in Cancun is incredible. Lots of cabanas on the beach and if you get a swim out suite you have a dedicated cabana. They have giant jacuzzis overlooking the Caribbean. The cost is about $700 a night but if you have an AMEX you can use the points to cover a portion (or all) of your stay. We had dinner on the beach one night and it was absolutely amazing.

We are staying at Playa mujeres Excellence and it is absolutely stunning I have read only rave reviews about the resort as a whole, food, views and entertainment. Totally would look into it!

I’d recommend Aruba – its outside the hurricane belt. The Hilton is fantastic, newly renovated. Not super unique or fancy rooms like you describe though, but they do have ac, Caribbean flavor, and walking distance from everything you need. No need to rent a car. The water is aaaaaaamaaaaaaazing there.

I would not go to Cancun, the water is not calm (at leaat every time I went). How about Puerto Rico?

100% Karisma Hotels Azul Beach in Riviera Maya. The hotel was small (148 rooms), is all inclusive with 4 restaurants for dinner, 1 large one for breakfast/lunch/dinner, and a separate beachside smaller restaurant for lunch. They had a great bar, we did a free tequila tasting with another couple, there were 2 swim up bars, and the drinks were great!
Best of all was that you could “book” a cabana a day ahead (no additional charge), they had some that were swings too! You can have drinks and snacks (chips/salsa, fruit, etc.) brought over and just lay out by the beach for as long as you like. We only paid a $4 fee each for using the water/beach so they could care for it. You could also take out (for free) a kayak or paddle board, or just swim about.
They have more night activities going on, but we didn’t feel like participating. We went end of August, there were a few families but we were still able to not feel crowded or overwhelmed for the most part. It is also a family hotel but they have separate areas for kids to do activities.
We went on one excursion, only at the recommendation of a guest, I think it was called Xtreme something. You do ziplining, some watercar activity through a path, and a sort of “kayaking” and light hand paddling through caves. We did this in the evening which I 100% recommend. (My Fiance got badly sunburnt and so this was a better choice).
Absolutely loved it. Our room was great, we felt very comfortable there and I feel like we had the same hang out by the beach and relax desire that you and your Fiance want. We took this trip before we became engaged and are now trying to find something like this in another location! We are considering going to one of their hotels in Jamaica because I loved the intimacy, service, and the ease of staying there.

I forgot to mention you can also get a room with a swim-up entrance if you want. I realize after re-reading that you aren’t big drinkers. I am not, but still had a fun time having a some smoothie style drinks and the occasional tequila drink – they introduced me to a Paloma which is lovely.
I still think it would be a great place for you to go on your honeymoon!
