I admit it, I know nothing about flowers. I’m not a huge flower fan. So, to me, carnations seem like a perfect wedding choice because they are simple, pretty & cheap. I mentioned this to my Maid/Matron of Honor and she stopped dead in her tracks & told me I simply could not have carnations at my wedding. She said they were funeral flowers. I tend to disagree, but would love to hear if anyone has used them as their centerpieces, and how they looked. If anyone has pictures to share, please post. I really don’t know what to do about flowers…

carnations were Carrie Bradshaw’s favorite flower on SATC. I think they’re great and look really pretty clustered together. So what if your Maid/Matron of Honor doesn’t like them!

- Wedding: August 2009 - St. Thomas of Villanova Church & the F.U.E.L. House
We’re using a bunch of carnations throughout the wedding — they’re lovely in bunches or as bright filler for flowery (but budget-friendly) bouquets! And they smell pretty nice, too

We are only using carnations in the flowered arch for our ceremony. They just aren’t my favorite. But that has nothing to do with funerals.

thanks everyone!! this makes me feel better. i think they are very pretty and am definitely looking into using them!

I like the way carnations look together…and they have so much more staying power. A wilted rose at the end of the day will never look that pretty. I plan on making some extra centerpieces with them (guest book table, escort card table) and some pomanders.

I actually didn’t like the idea either until I saw pictures. They are really making a comback and they are very beautiful.

I’m using ALL carnations for everything! They really can be very pretty! My centerpeices are actually posted above (they are the white carnations in the tall square vase with the ribbon) Here are a few more of my inspiration pictures.

I especially love white & pink carnations. I don’t really care for ones with traces of dark color around the edges.
I went to a wedding with carnations packed into mint julep cups and it was gorgeous!

We are using carnations too!! I love how pretty and clean they look in groups like that. We will have some low pomanderes on tables and some tall ones with crystals. I plan on doing white pomanders and gree and the linens will be a cornflower blue (check my bio!)

Carnations are as much a funeral flower as roses or lilies. It’s ridiculous to not use a certain flower because it’s also popular at funerals.
That being said, I think carnations can be used to make very beautiful arrangements as posted above. Go for it.

I totally dissagree! they’re a great flower! like in the pictures above I am having cranation pomanders at my wedding (about 24 of them) they’re not even my wedding flower (callas and roses) but they were perfect! they look great!

I think the refrence as carnations being a funeral flower comes from Germany. Back home in germany, carnations are THE funeral flower and you really dont see them used in anything else unless it is very modern and cutting edge. So really unless your guest and family is full of uber traditional germans I think everyone would love carnations in your wedding decor.
