GG_Vega:  I understand the creepy vibe. We stayed off resort in a residential area near the Spanish lagoon. It was ok, but def sketchy at times. I saw a woman’s things stolen, but I guess that can happen anywhere. Funny story- my first day there, I was lounging on beach (it was tucked in mangrove so it felt a little more secluded) drinking it in, when I heard barking. There are strays eveeywhere and Arubans let their dogs wander. Well just beyond the mangrove I guess there was a junkyard or vacant lot that the strays gathered, because while basking in sun, I heard a dogfight break out and heard a dog being murdered by the pack. WTH?!

We did hit up the resorts once so Fiance could catch a game on TV at bar, but that was awful too! The beach was like “human soup”, the cost at bar was appalling, and it was crowded. We went during feb break (I’m a teacher) and there were kids everywhere. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. At least at the mangrove beach across from our rental, I could sunbathe topless because it was a little more secluded and mostly Europeans went there (I would only do that if Fiance was with me).

We were looking into Turks and Caicos, too!

FutureMrsSamFoster:  I really enjoyed Puerto Rico. Most of the hotels are not inclusive so you can dine locally, but if you’re looking for all inclusive, there are some available.  For me, Puerto Rico was great because there was so mcuh to do other than drinking and beaching. There’s a lot of great shops, food, and also outdoorsy things like hiking in the rainforest, kayaking in the bioluminscent (sp?) bay, and other water sports.

The other place I would suggest is Belize. Although I have not been yet, we booked flights for this summer. I’ve seen a ton of really cool packages that include “beach and mayan ruins”. Amergis Cay was voted the most beautiful island in the world. I would check it out!
