We are currently in the middle of setting up our registry. I’ve registered at some brick and mortar stores, but what we would like to do is set up a registry for cash contributions to a very specific gift because we do not have room for a lot of things in our small apartment and will be moving long distance a few months after the wedding. We are also not going on a honeymoon. However, we are currently going through the green card process, which is very expensive. We wanted to set up a gift registry so people could sponsor very specific application fees and lawyer fees of the green card process.
We would say something like “One of the most important gifts you could give us would be our ability to stay in the same country together once we are married. In order to do this, we need to go through an arduous and expensive green card process. If you would like to sponsor part of a visa fee, we would be extremely grateful” or something like that… and then we would have the cost of the different visa fees broken down so people could contribute.
I was hoping to find a site with a layout like honeyfund, where you can split up the cost of of something into different portions and people can give towards that experience (or in our case, visa application fee). However, I haven’t found a site that allows non-honeymoon cash contributions without a fee. Any suggestions?

I like the thought behind this but I don’t think it is really necessary. People will just give you cash no matter what. And then you can use it toward whatever you want. I never came across a site that didn’t have fees either.

I agree that if you just put the word out with your friends and family that you need money for the green card process, a lot of people will give you cash without needing a cash registry. I don’t think that any of them would give you a registry for free.
EDIT: You can also set up an account at Smartypig.com. It is an online savings account that lets you save for a specific goal and people can make contributions to the goal.

we’re using a depositagift.com registry – it does exactly what you’re asking for. maybe you’d want to do it for the green card and for some home decor stuff for the new place where you are moving? or activities to do in the new place where you are moving (like a tour of the new city, nights on the town, etc)–you could even call it ‘Honeymoon in X City’ or ‘Honeymoon In Our New Home Town”. i totally understand your situation, but not sure everyone’s going to want to pay your visa fees…some might, but some might not. so to cover yourself, and have some fun with it, put other things on the cash registry as well. that way it gives your guests options, but in the end you still get the money to do with what you want.
