I was wondering if anyone had been successful at making a dog hating cat accept a dog. None of my cats love dogs (my youngest boy will tolerate them as long as they don’t come too close, my oldest girl just avoids them), but one in particular loathes them.
Case in point: Ginger was just sleeping. All of a sudden, a dog barks outside. Ginger jumps up, eyes like saucers, and looks in the direction of the bark. Then he starts to growl and flex his body, as if waiting to attack (it isn’t fear… it’s aggression).
And when my brother’s lovely, well behaved dog comes around… I have never seen a cat fluff up like that… or growl, hiss and glare like that. He actively stalks the dog, glaring at it and making aggressive noises. The poor dog just sits there. Ginger can be mollified if you stroke him… it stops him fluffing up… but he still won’t take his eyes off the dog. It might be better with a puppy, but I’d be worried that he can barely restrain himself from going for the dog as it is, and it’s a big dog.
That said, he can be aggressive with adult cats, and he is territorial, but he has never harmed a kitten. He is usually very maternal…
If I want to get a dog one day, any tips beyond the standard introductory procedure ones (slow, swap smells, separate territories etc)?
