My cat is pretty easy going. All she does is sleep and eat. She is very sweet and loving, never bites, scratches, etc. Last night Fiance was out of town visiting his cousin so I was home alone which is pretty rare. I ws keeping myself occupied with some wedding projects and watching a movie and around midnight my cat started howling. She does this sometimes when I’m downstairs and she’s upstairs and wants my attention. I called her a few times to come downstairs but the howling continued and turned into growling. This seemed strange so I went upstairs. She was staring at this storage cabinet we have in the upstairs hallway. The cabinet has glass front doors. I tried to pet her to calm her down, and she hissed at me, which she’s never done before, continuing to stare hard at the cabinet. So I armed myself with a can of Raid and bravely went through the cabinet, moving around all the contents, thinking maybe she saw a spider or a mouse. But I didn’t see anything, didn’t hear anything and she was continuing to growl. The only thing I could think of was that she was seeing her reflection. I ran my hands over the glass to show her it was just a reflection and opened the doors so that they weren’t catching the light. After a little while she calmed down and was her usual self, rolling on the floor wanting belly rubs.
At this point it was pretty late so I got ready for bed and while I was brushing my teeth she went out to the hallway again and started the same thing. I again showed her nothing was there and carried her into my bedroom togo to sleep. Even this morning she walks by the cabinet cautiously, and I found puke right next to it.
Have any of you had your cat do this? It’s so out of character for her. She isn’t the smartest cat, but she’s so mild mannered usually. I will probably just tape paper over the glass, but this seems so weird!

My cat’s never been scared of his reflection, he’s kind of obsessed with looking at his reflection. He’s pretty vain 😉
Does she not get along with other cats? I’m guessing maybe she thinks it’s another cat and is defending herself/her territory.

It’s actually quite common.

Mine was terrified of her reflection at first, now she looks/meows at you in the mirror. So obviously she got over it.
ETA: I mean terrified. Huge, poofy, arched back and hissed at the “other cat” and anyone she saw in the mirror. It just took time.

Omg my cat does the same thing! Our new place has a coat closet when you first walk in with mirrored doors. She hisses and swats at herself.. its hilarious!

LOL. My cat at one point was fascinated by the full length mirror that leans against the bedroom wall. She looked at herself in it, looked behind it, then, while looking at herself in it, stretched one paw behind the mirror to figure out where this other cat was.
I couldn’t figure out if that made her really smart or really dumb.

Lol this is pretty normal, she’s a cat, so “reflection” is totally beyond her. She’ll probably get over it eventually when she figures out that cat is always there, but pets have no concept of what they look like so a lot of them think a reflection is another cat or dog

Haha yeah, this is pretty normal. My little one is scared of everything, but she loves the full length mirror we have. She stares at it and paws at it like she has no idea what it is.

Glad to hear she’s not the only one. The cabinet has been there for almost a year so it just seemed weird that all of a sudden it became problematic. Hopefully the paper over the glass will help!

Lol!!! Our cats have not done that.

My cat isn’t scared of his reflection, but he always tries to play with “the cat in the fireplace.” It’s so funny to watch!

Try spraying hairspray on the doors, it dulls the reflections. It’s a movie/set dressing trick 🙂

My cat thinks her reflection is another cat friend! At night when she can see her reflection in the glass door she “talks” to her friend and runs at the glass, jumps, and “high fives” her “friend”! haha. She’s silly.
