I was chatting about dogs yesterday and was thinking maybe you all could satisfy my curiosity about my FI’s cat. I always grew up with dogs so cat behavior is still a mystery to me.
This cat just loves to drink water from everything besides her water bowl! We have a couch with cup holders. The minute you become more interested in the TV than your glass of water – her entire face is in the glass. 🙂 She drinks from dripping faucets. She hops in the tub after we take showers and laps up whatever water she finds. (Ick!)
I’ve read that I should only be concerned for her health if she is drinking crazy amounts of water. Which is not the case because her water bowl is never empty. The bowl is some sort of silvery metal dish. Maybe it’s giving a metalic taste to the water? Should I try a different water bowl?
Or is this just normal silly cat behavior? Like how out of no-where she’ll run around the whole apartment at light speed for 20 seconds and then just go back to normal like nothing happened. I’m told this is standard. 🙂
Oh my god. All of the sudden we are dealing with this same thing. My cat is 10 and has just taken up drinking out of the toilet (awesome), the kitchen sink, the tub. Everywhere. It’s to the point that when I get up in the morning he’s already sitting on the bathroom sink waiting — meowing! loudly! — for me to turn it on. Same thing when it’s time to wash up at night. It so bizzare. We now have two bowls out for him, glass and ceramic, and they appear to be nothing more to him than places to drop Q-tips (his other obsession).
On the other hand, now that our gato is getting up in years, he rarely has the “witching hour” and doesn’t run around like a manic at 11 p.m. anymore. I miss it and it reminds me he’s not as spry as he used to be.
A friend of mine has a water fountain as well… she says it works wonders. I think it was a bit on the pricey side, but I’ve been feeding her cats when she’s out of town for the past 3 years and the thing still works, so it must have been worth the investment.
Sounds normal 🙂 My cat would jump in the shower if I let her. She’s just a silly cat. I think most cats have a lot more personality than people think. She meets me at the door, jumps up on me so I will hold her and snuggles like a teddy bear when it’s time to go to bed. And the running thing? Mine does it too. She also has this weird thing about our laptop, whenever we open it she freaks out and runs to the window like somethings going to happen. Just the little joys of being a cat owner 🙂
@AprilJo2011: I LOVE that show!! We have learned a lot about our cat watching that show, and have built cat shelves and are in the middle of making a cat walk along the top of the wall in the living room becaue of that show. We also watch Its Me or the Dog to learn about the dogs
@Bichon Frise: It’s half adorable, half infuriating. It’s adorable to see him strutting proudly with one hanging out of his mouth on the way to the water bowl*. It’s less adorable to come home and have to fish 7 dirty ones out of the water bowl. It is infurating to walk into the bathroom five times a day and find trash strewn everywhere, since that’s where he hunts for them. There have also been a few incidents of him getting into the main stash, resulting in slightly less than 400-ish brand new Q-tips all over the floor. Wheeeee!
*The water bowl is where he drops his “kills.” There was one day when I spend about 7 seconds being 99 percent sure that there was a dead rat in his waterbowl. It was a toy.
@MrsSl82be: We learned that they hate being held like babies. One of ours hates being held, period. But he tolerates it as long as you hold him as if he sits on your arms. It also explained why they always try to get on the highest shelves and cabinets.
I will check out “It’s Me or the Dog”! Hubby desparately wants a puppy.
