mingogo :  I would be the same way, I need everything in writing for my own sanity lol.  I think you should expect some sort of confirmation if a deposit wasn’t required.  Maybe just ask for a written estimate?

A professional would have no problem providing a written estimate AND/OR a contract in writing.  Think about the ramifications.  They could prepare something completely different from what you talked about or charge you crazy amounts for stuff you didn’t discuss….do you have any recourse other than “he said/she said”?  

You should have contracts with ALL vendors.  Its to safeguard both the client and the vendor.  This is a normal business transaction so contact them again, ask for the estimate in writing and let them know you will move on to other vendors if this isn’t done.  Don’t be afraid to do this bee…. the lack of something in writing is a red flag to me.
