So here recently we have been looking into catering options. I have talked to 5 different catering companys and all are estimated me at 40-60 dollars a plate for buffet with 2 meats and 2 sides plus rolls and drinks. I about died hearing this. Everyone I have known to get marreid always told me they paid less than 1500 so I was confused how mine was coming out to be mover 5000 dollars. Then I realized I have been contacting only catering companies and not any restaurants that cater. My question for you bees is how do these differ? Like will I get less quiality of food or will I get less quaility of service? I think the price is going to be significantly cheaper but am not sure if there is a hidden reason I should know about. Thanks guys!!

Catering companies are full service. They (can) provide plates, flatwear, servers, bartenders, alcohol AND food. They set up the food, serve the food, clean everything up after.
Restaurants will generally just drop off the food in a disposable tray.
So you are paying for all the ‘extras’ usually.

scissorgirl: I was going to say the same. If you’re doing a buffet, you may be able to go through a restaurant since you technically wouldn’t need servers.
The best thing I can say is to call a few, talk to them, and see what all they offer. Then you can make a decision based off of that.
It also depends on the formality that you’re going for as well.

Yup. You can also rent some of those things seprately if you are on a budget. Hire your own servers/bartenders for less than what they are charging. Get your own chaffing dishes/burners. It’s just a bit more work and coordination.
Some caterers might also work with your budget if you don’t need all of that stuff too. It probably still won’t be as cheap as a restaruant, but always an option!
