hey ladies, i have been researching this one church that we are interested in being married in. they want a large “donation” but my parents said it’s do-able. there seems to be a lot of fees involved besides building usage, and i guess i have to ask the church which are required, but my question here is about the church bells. i’ve only been to one wedding and it was a newer church so if they had bells, they weren’t rung. the pamphlet this church presented me with has “bell ringers” listed in the fees. they want $250 for it (which i think is expensive) but is it likely for cathedrals to ring their bells after a ceremony? or is this a rare occurance? i think it would be super cool to hear the bells being rung at this gorgeous church as i was just in new york city this weekend where st. thomas (not st. patrick) on 5th avenue was ringing their bells. i loved the sound. so if it’s not required by the church to pay this fee i am considering it. so, is it common for cathedral bells to ring, or is it just a “eh, sometimes, if you feel like paying for it” kind of thing?

Well, I didn’t get married in a Cathedral BUT did get married in little Church that fits the “classic chapel” look and it had a bell. We didn’t have a fee or anything, since they didn’t provide anyone/thing for the service BUT someone did climb the ladder to the balcony and so RANG IT!!! It was really great as my new husband and I stood out on the porch awaiting our guests for our receiving line to hear it.
I don’t know if I’d pay a fee for something like that… especially such a hefty one, but I guess if it fit in budget then I’d defintiley do it =)

thanks for your input. i can see why a lot of people would say it’s not neccessary, but have you ever heard a cathedral in a city ring their bells? it just sounds so beautiful.
anyone else have any thoughts?

I think the sound of the bells is amazing. I know from weddings I have planned that there is usually a fee associated with this.
