We’re having a full mass for our wedding ceremony. The church that we’re getting married at has an amazing music director. Every time I go to this church we sing the Our Father (the traditional chant with no instruments) and I am blown away EVERY TIME! Week after week it gives me chills. I know it’s because the whole congregation is singing along (suprising! lol). This is my question, should I ask the director to have that part sung at my wedding? I know it’s not normally done because apparently people shy away from it when it’s not just said, especially at weddings since there will be a lot of lapsed catholics that don’t go to mass every week (probably once or twice a year, if that). I also know, that since the whole church won’t be filled, that it’s not going to sound the same. Would it be wierd if I did it anyways?
PS: I know my Mom’s side of the family along with a good chunk of my friends would definitely participate.

@Woodstock: I say go for it! It sounds like it would be special for you, and you are already okay with it not sounding quite as loud/good as it does at a regular mass.

I would definitely do this. St. Augustine said that “singing is praying twice,” and singing the Our Father is just really, really beautiful. The chant Our Father is classic, and I bet you’d be surprised how many of those lapsed Catholics will remember it – and love the opportunity to hear it again!
FWIW, we are going to be using the Steve Warner setting of the Our Father (from “Mass of Our Lady”) to sing that part. One of my all-time favorites!

I love that idea! Most Christians know the our father anyways, and generally after the first one or two lines of a church song anyone can catch on. The notes always tend to follow predictable patterns in Catholic church music.
I think you might be surprised at the number of non-Catholics who end up singing along as well.

That sounds really beautiful and unique. Do it!

Love the idea! I would do it too if I could 🙂 Maybe you can get a choir to sing in your wedding, just in case not everyone participates, you know there will be enough voices to make it sound really good.

Absolutely <3! The Our Father chant is gorgeous, especially when everyone sings it!
