hopfenn : We have a very active little kitten that likes “attacking” us in a playful way all the time. But we bought plenty of different style toys for her that we keep strewn around the apartment.
We also have a leather couch, but there’s not even one scratch mark on it!
She has a little kitty bed scratcher thing made of cardboard that she is curved and she lounges on top of. And then she also has a three feet long scratching mat meant for the wall but which we keep on the floor. She uses those.
The vet clipped her nails, and since then it doesn’t hurt at all when she ends up scratching us during play. We have to buy a pair of clippers soon because her nails are starting to grow back. As long as you’re careful, watch some videos on this, she’s relaxed, and you have someone to help you hold her, you can clip her nails by pressing on her paws to get her to extend the nails out.
(But be careful not to cut into the “quick,” which is the little red blood line supply you’ll see when you look at her claws. That would hurt.)

We use double sided sticky tape to keep from scratching, worked like a charm.
We don’t let our cats on our furniture unless we call them onto our laps. So we use a spray bottle to keep them off of the furniture.

sandiegobee : Definitely can’t cancel it! It’s a custom order and it’s a few short weeks away from being delivered. We actually ordered it a few months ago before our original cat passed away – we only had the one at the time and when we got him he was declawed so we didn’t think twice about it. When he passed, we adopted these two fully-pointy-clawed girls – now we just have to try to make it work!
anev : Thanks! I think we’re definitely going to try these – if they work out, they seem like the most fool-proof way of solving the problem!
slothbear : I just ordered another scratching post/cat tree yesterday that we’re going to put in the room with the couch so I hope that will help 😀 Both of my girls let me clip their nails yesterday! I started slow and only clipped the very tip to see how they would do – I just used my own nail clippers so I have to get some cat-specific ones so that I can try to clip their nails a little bit farther. So far so good, though! They got lots of treats and cuddles for being good girls while I was nail clipping!
ahartig : That’s magical, I’ve never known anyone who was able to keep their cats off furniture! Kudos to you 😀
