So a few weeks ago (probably three or four now), one of our cats tried to escape the apartment. I swooped down and grabbed him…and lifted with my back. Right away, I was like, “Oh no…”
Last week, I went to a chiropractor to see if that would help, but he turned out to be a total quack and refused to address my lower back issues at all. I had my first physical therapy session yesterday and the PT figured out that I ended up herniating one of my disks (ouch).
He said that the first step is to sit on a rolled-up towel and put another one in the small of my back whenever I have to sit (I have a desk job, so that’s a lot of sitting), and he also gave me some exercises to do. He also said that once I can go a full 48 hours without pain, I can work on bending forward again (I’m not allowed to bend at the waist for any reason until the pain goes away because if I do, the disk won’t be able to heal itself). I’m really sore today from all the stretches I did yesterday, but I’m sucking it up. My next appointment is Thursday morning.
Has anyone else had this problem? What worked for you in terms of controlling the pain?
I took an Aleve this morning because I was in a ton of pain, but I feel like I shouldn’t take any more after this so I can tell when the pain goes away… and to think that lifting a (very heavy) cat did this! 😛
ETA: The bright side is that the “no bending at the waist” rule means I can’t do dishes, pick things up off the floor (well, unless I squat to do it), clean the litter box, etc… 😀 Darling Husband is not amused.
