Sounds like polite flattery and affirmation, but I definitely wouldn’t know the proper response either–‘thank you’? A compliment re: their kids?

Eh sounds like one of those throwaway comments you make when you’re being polite. You can just give them a similar polite comment. Ask them about their children, admire their house, ect. I wouldn’t consider them actually jealous or feel weird about the comment. I have a friend who just got out of a bad relationship, to be nice I talked about how much I miss living alone and having a lot of free time. Although I do miss those things from time to time, I wouldn’t trade my life with Fiance for the entire world. Hope that makes sense.

_blackbird_:  We are also CBC in fact fiance is going for a vasectomy in just over a month. We get comments all the time because we bought a family sized house when it is just the two of us. People always make s the comment that we need to have kids because we have to fill the bedrooms LOL.

Also I just tell people if they make comments about us travelling or buying expensive things that this is why we don’t have kids because we want to do these things. If you are going to make the choice not to have kids you better live your life to the fullest is the way I look at things.

Agree with BlushingHoneyBee.  It’s probably just a light hearted comment without any real meaning behind it.  Plenty of people have more, and plenty have less…. I doubt they are specifically envious or jealous of *you* per se even if they did mean it.  Just anyone in general with more financial freedom.  We make good money, live below our means day to day cause that’s just who we are so we can put away alot.  I still plan to continue to travel and spend my money on whatever I want even after children. Sounds like your friends would probably say they envy my ability to travel, buy luxury goods and have kids too.

Sorry to interrupt. What does CBC mean? I’ve been all over the sticky links and google and can’t figure it out… :/

Oh man, as someone with two small kids they probably just wanted to bask in your lifestyle for awhile. Time and space is sooo precious! I compliment people when they have really behaved kids, or my sister in law who has older kids that go and do their own thing. It’s totally envy for me, but in a good way. We all made our choices haha.

_blackbird_:  The grass is always greener. Sometimes light-heartedly, sometimes more sincerely. There’s always something to envy or be curious about in other people’s lives. Married vs single, kids vs CBC, working parent vs stay-at-home parent, high pressure but high pay job vs lower pressure but lower paid job, city vs suburbs vs country, parents live down the block vs parents live on another continent, the list goes on. When someone expresses envy about an aspect of my life, I usually say “there are pros and cons” and then ask about some part of their life that I think is interesting or cool.

_blackbird_:  I’m not CBC, but am childless in a 3 bedroom house. When people make comments to me about filling the house with babies I laugh and say “if we have a baby (dog) would be so crushed to give up her bedroom and playroom. I couldn’t do that to her”. This works even better if you have a fish or hamster– people think I’m serious about the dog 🙂

About the original post, my friends with children are envious that I can go to the gym, have a white couch and not eat chicken nuggets. They don’t want my life and to give up their kids, they miss the option of the white couch.
