I would make sure your phone and plan are capable of working outside the country. I always coordinate my plan for international use before I leave.

I usually lose signal on a cruise ship, yes.  Double check with your provider for roaming charges and the like.  And keep in mind that some cruise ships just have a room where you can pay to use a computer for 30 minutes or something and that’s what they mean by having Wifi.  It’s not necessarily ship-wide wifi.

I’ve never been on a cruise, but my family members have been on many. They never have cell service while out at sea (where would the towers be…they’re in the middle of the ocean!). Most ships do have WiFi for purchase. I would see about adding an international plan for the month you’ll be cruising. You likely won’t have service at sea, but you will while in port.

We paid Verizon I think $10 for the month to use our phone in Mexico and the Bahamas but I don’t think you will be able to make calls on the cruise ship while at sea.  Internet is expensive but when we had to make calls to Fiancee’s dad while on cruises, we used Skype phone app on my cell phone while on the ship’s internet.  It worked ok for the most part but may not work during high internet traffic times.  We found 10pm was a bad time to use the internet because they said that a lot of crew were off for the night and in their stateroom using it.
