I already have 14″ hurricane lamps for the center. And I’m putting 5 tealights in holders around that, probably about 8″-10″ from the base.
I plan to fill the hurricane lamps halfway with water, then have a floating candle. In the bottom there will be river rocks and shells.
(I originally wanted them filled all the way up and having orchids in them, but that might cost too much.)
Do you think my current idea is too neutral in color? It will be just white, tans, and browns.

A lot of brides rock the neutral look! What will the rest of the reception decor look like? Are your linens going to be white? I definitely think you can pull this off.

Here’s a picture similar to what I’m thinking, except of course there would be shells instead of autum leaves.

My reception venue is pretty neutral: http://www.parkwaywest.com/facilities.html
Table clothes will be white. Maybe light green & light blue napkins, haven’t decided on the napkins yet.

I like it! Im keeping mine simple as well. One floating casablanca lilly and little tea candles bordering it!

Another option would be to choose a cheaper flower….tulips are really pretty. You could choose a white tulip that would keep things a little more neutral.

It will be a reception for a destination beach wedding, so I’m wanting to keep it more on the tropical look. Do you know any tropical looking flowers that are cheaper than orchids?

Maybe you could buy a hibiscus plant and cut the blooms off. I bought one with a lot of blooms last year for $20…a couple larger plants would do it and you could enjoy the plants for the rest of the year.

@abbyful: Lillies! This is just a pic of my cake inspiration. They are gorgeous and look really tropical. We are having a beach wedding too!

@missmichigan: I think the lilies look great and would probably hold up better than a hibiscus! Beautiful inspiration cake.

When you cut hibiscus flowers you are actually supposed to float them in a bowl of water but I don’t think they can be submerged.
I like how in your sample picture it was a neutral centerpiece but on a colored mat/charger. Could you do something like that to add some color. I have seen people even use 12×12 pieces of scrapbook paper and it looks great!
